Cyril Wecht, nationally renowned pathologist and former Allegheny County Democratic leader, dies at 93

His criticism of report on JFK's assassination has consumed much of his career, which included stints as county coroner, commissioner and Democratic party chair



Cyril Harrison Wecht, a flamboyant and controversial Allegheny County coroner, commissioner and Democratic Party leader, died Monday. He was 93.

His death was announced by the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts.

Dr. Wecht, a nationally known forensic pathologist with a law degrees from the University of Maryland and the University of Pittsburgh and a medical degree from Pitt, was one of the more vocal critics of the Warren Commission report that concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald alone was responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy....

Throughout his career, Dr. Wecht performed approximately 21,000 autopsies and additionally was involved in approximately 42,000 postmortem examinations he either reviewed or consulted on, including cases in many foreign countries. He also wrote or co-wrote more than 650 professional publications, edited 48 books and co-authored the popular non-fiction books “Cause of Death,” “Grave Secrets,” “Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey?,” “Mortal Evidence,” “Tales from the Morgue,” “Crime Scene To Courtroom,” and “Final Exams.”

In 2013, I had the honor and privilege of meeting him at the JFK: Passing the Torch conference at Duquesne University.
