Abortion Rights Get a Win in Texas

Source: Newsweek

Published May 11, 2024 at 5:48 PM EDT | Updated May 11, 2024 at 7:02 PM EDT

A small Texas town unanimously voted against a proposed ordinance to declare itself a Sanctuary City for the Unborn on Thursday.

Following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, leaving individual states to choose their own legal status on abortion, Texas enacted one of the strictest abortion bans in the United States. Texas' ban, which does not have exceptions for rape, incest or medical needs, goes into effect as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

However, since the measures were put into effect, cities across Texas have considered and passed ordinances, declaring themselves Sanctuary City for the Unborn. The ordinance is a continued strategy by conservative activists to further restrict abortion, which allows private citizens to sue anyone who provides or "aids or abets" an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.

On Thursday, the Clarendon City Council voted 3-0 against the proposed ordinance to declare itself a sanctuary city.

Sanctuary city for the unborn? That is very creepy. Are these fetuses going to crawl out of the womb and travel to the city waiting to become born? As if these fetuses and the unborn even have brains developed enough to be able to visit these sanctuary cities.

The ACLU claims that the unborn are given special rights in these cities. As if you can separate fetuses from the person carrying it and give it extra voting privileges or something.

Fetuses already have special privileges. They are allowed to use a person's body without that person's consent.

Can I get you extra kidney without your consent? Can I get a bone marrow donation or blood transfusion without your consent? Nope, only fetuses can force a person to give up the use of their body against their will.

All coming to you based on an imaginary super daddy in the sky. Without religion, forced birth is bizzaro and has no logical reason.

3. The RW loons have taken to adopting the policy language of liberals (like "sanctuary cities" for immigrants)

It provides a broader overview than the Newsweek article that likely lifted their coverage from the Texas Tribune.

13. "They are allowed to use a person's body without that person's consent." So many existing laws for over 100+ years

on the local, state, federal books against this.

Would take a good lawyer to turn this about in Texas against the Republicans and fake Christians

4. This story actually involves abortion travel restrictions rather than Clarendon being a "Sanctuary City" since there

are less than 2,000 people that reside there. There is an article in the Texas Tribune that provides better reporting including the counties and cities that adopted the abortion travel restrictions and a few where it is pending.

7. Okay, what is ironic is that the state law that the city does not want to violate

was adopted last year. The GOP legislature and Gov. Abbott were overreacting to some counties and cities adopting stronger COVID restrictions than the state.

for their own ordinances, which might explain the time gap.

They get from US 287 travelers, the only thing keeping that dump alive. Plus, it's a US Highway, so the travel can't be restricted, anyway. Doesn't do them much good to restrict something they don't really control.

8. In Texas the term "Sanctuary City" is the opposite of what it sounds like

... only because Texas has gone through the Looking Glass. "Sanctuary Cities" in Texas have no place for women who are hoping to get standard maternity healthcare.

Good on Clarendon City Council for refusing to fall for this right-wing bullshit.

Because the Jewish religion says that life begins at first breath, and, up until the time of birth, it is part of the mother.. And whether or not to have an abortion is the decision of the mother alone.
