Barber wins hard-fought race against McSally

Source: AzCentral.com

Ron Barber, the Congressional aide who was shot alongside U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and then won her seat in a special election earlier this year, has won the right to represent her district for a full term after a hard-fought race against former Air Force combat pilot Martha McSally.

The race for the 2nd Congressional District had been too close to call for 10 days, but on Friday an Arizona Republic analysis determined that McSally would not be able to muster enough votes from the remaining uncounted ballots to surpass the thin lead Barber had held in recent days.

Most of the remaining provisional ballots in the Southern Arizona district are from heavily Democratic precincts in Pima County, which have trended toward Barber throughout the election.

The race is the last to be decided in Arizona and tilts the state’s delegation to the Democrats for only the second time in 45 years.

We were blue in 08 (Pastor, Grijalva, Kirkpatrick, Giffords and Mitchell) and split in 06 (Pastor Grijalva, Giffords and Mitchell) and I think in 92 (Pastor, Coppersmith and English) - I remember being excited by the Dem. showing in 92 - Karan English had been a college professor of mine, Goldwater endorsed the Democrats and we exceeded expectations.

Rep. Mike McIntyre is still leading in that one.

She would have been a very bad addition to Congress. Congrats to the people of that district.

I remember thinking the initial results from Arizona were awfully red...then news got out that a half million votes still had not been counted! I wonder what happened to all those provisional votes by the 24,000 people those latino activist students registered. As I recall they only had until last Wednesday to come and prove they were registered....

This is after she herself received government subsidized government healthcare for decades. It's this type of attitude I can't stand. She's another Paul Ryan. She wanted to destroy the department of education? She is too damned hard right.

With five of nine Arizona U.S. House seats, Democrats are well-positioned to compete for Arizona in future U.S. Senate and Presidential contests.

Here are some thoughts for Democrats—

√ who want a Democratic U.S. House;

√ who believe strong Congressional races and persistent Democratic hegemony in a state’s Congressional delegation help improve Democratic messaging and competitiveness in the state;

√ who never want to send money again to Florida, Ohio, or Virginia;

√ who love Howard Dean, but hate sending money to incorrigible, deep-red states; and

√ who want to improve Democratic prospects for long-term competitiveness for the White House.

Target House races that —if won— would turn select states’ delegations Democratic. Send a few bucks now, and try to influence recruitment and fundraising in—
