Jessica Lynch: Former Prisoner Of War Plans To Become A Teacher
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Jessica Lynch was just 19 when the world first saw her - a broken, blond soldier caught on combat video in Iraq, her face wearing something between a grimace and a grin.
The Army supply clerk was being carried on a stretcher after nine days as a prisoner of war. She had been captured along with five others after the 507th Maintenance Company took a wrong turn and came under attack in Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003. Eleven of her fellow soldiers died.
Lynch had joined the Army at 18 to earn money for college and become a school teacher. This Friday, at 28, she completes that mission.
She'll spend Thursday finishing her training as a student teacher at the same elementary school she attended in sparsely populated Wirt County. Then, on badly damaged legs and a right foot that still pains her, she'll walk across a stage Friday evening and get her education degree from West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

(70,504 posts)She stood up and called out the bush admin. and the media for the lies about how she fought,
her capture, and her daring rescue. I wish her well she could have cashed in big time
but it looks like she wants to help people and do the right thing.

(44,576 posts)What does her hair color or looks have to with anything? Do we STILL need a "helpless white female" angle to sell this story?
...The U.S. government used footage of Lynch to spin a tale that exaggerated the truth. To make her seem more heroic and rally public support for the war, the military claimed she'd gone down firing - when, in fact, her rifle had jammed...
They did a lot more than that. The Iraqis took her to a hospital --not a prison -- then tried to deliver her back to the US military when her ambulance was fired upon and her hospital stormed.
"The bottom line is the American people are capable of determining their own ideals of heroes," she told Congress in 2007, "and they don't need to be told elaborate lies."
The Iraq invasion itself being the most elaborate lie of all.
How low the HuffPost has fallen in the hands of AOL. And how ironic that they're using the same phony PR tactics that Jessica resisted. Hope they've started paying their bloggers now.

(16,207 posts)that Jessica Lynch leaves one war to find herself in another - the war on teachers in this country.
I am very happy for her accomplishment. I hope she will be able to find a job in a school that values her contributions.

(15,774 posts)At times like these, I cannot help but think of Lori Piestwa-her commrade in arms. They will be forever linked in my mind. Jessicas helped get a house built for Lori's family after her death and I am sure she is a treasured auntie to Lori's children. Jessica was a 19 yo from WV and Lori was a single mom with 2 small kids and was a Navajo Indian from Arizona. I think of them both every time I see Piestwa Peak on the way to mom's house. You will not hear this story in the news, but that is the type of person Jessica is.
Our school was close to their unit in El Paso and adopted the unit. They came for our parade, and the elementary kids sent them cards and letters. It was a real shock when the unit was captured and when several died. The kids took it hard learned some important life lessons.
