Canadian the only illegal alien caught in U.S. fake-voter dragnet

Source: The Globe and Mail

But after months of searching, only one alien falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen has been caught, charged and convicted in Florida. It turns out he is a Canadian, a man who registered and voted in at least two presidential elections while masquerading as a citizen so he could also buy and “bear arms,” that other right cherished by many Americans.

Josef Sever, 52, won’t be voting in Florida this November, though. He pleaded guilty on Aug. 30 in federal court in Miami to multiple felony charges of falsely attesting to be a U.S. citizen and illegally voting. Three days after the Nov. 6 election, when Americans will choose between giving Barack Obama a second term or sending Republican challenger Mitt Romney to the White House, Mr. Sever will be sentenced.

He faces up to five years in prison before his long-running scam passing as a U.S. citizen ends with deportation back to Canada.

......

That the effort has only netted Mr. Sever so far has led to some considerable lampooning of Mr. Scott by liberal commentators. Under pressure from the governor, the state’s electoral officials had initially flagged more than 180,000 names (many of them Hispanic-sounding) for checking. All but 2,600 of those initially flagged – some of whom turned out to be not only citizens, but military veterans with service in Afghanistan and Iraq – were quickly determined to be bonafide citizens and restored to the voter rolls.

Discuss this news as you like, as I laugh my A** off with this former Austrian now Canadian citizen gun-toting nut pretended to be an American citizen to vote in 2004 and 2008, (perhaps other elections). I'm SURE he voted for Obama, right???????

The poor man cannot meet his $50,000 bail and will stay in jail awaiting sentencing in November, (when he will NOT be voting nor carrying his gun!)

most of the righties are claiming that the state doesn't need to issue a new ID because "everyone has a driver's license." Well, a driver's license does not prove citizenship, and I could be a Canadian for all they know, while that person with a Spanish name could be Puerto Rican, and therefore a U.S. citizen, and that young African woman in a hijab could be part of the first generation of Somalis born in the U.S.

drivers licenses in Florida, but now there is a special license for legal aliens. You can tell at a glance that the holder of one is not a US Citizen.

One of the arguments against the Voter ID initiative is that the righties are talking out of both sides of their mouth. On the one hand, they say that a driver's license should be enough proof of identification, while on the other hand, they're saying that the Al Franken won his Senate seat and Mark Dayton won the governorship of Minnesota only because the Democrats encouraged illegal immigrants to vote.

I can't post the picture from the link, but see the resemblance. No way these two aren't related:

I'd love to see someone draw a real connection.

Actually, I'd like to know which Austrian moves to Canada to become a citizen and then moves to Florida to pretend to be a U.S. Citizen.. are there thousands of more of them hiding out in Florida? I have visited Florida in winter and found lots of tourists with German accents there!!!! (Just kidding, I think most Germans would never leave their socialist medicine nation for Florida but heck, what do we know??)

Yup, something's up with this one. Let's see if he ever does any time. His twin didn't do any time for defrauding the taxpayers, either.

After Tom DeLay's brownshirt road show happen in Florida, and his subsequent sentencing to prison but still free as a bird song and dance routine, there's nothing I wouldn't put past them.

Just wild speculation on my part, of course, but it's just that fantastic.
