(50,557 posts)Ryan: "When Reagan did this, it worked."
Me: "No, Paul. When Reagan did this in August 1982, by his signing of the Kemp-Roth Tax Cut, it immediately began a 16-month string of higher unemployment rates that ended with a 10.8 percent unemployment rate, the highest recorded in the post-World War II era. It also resulted in a rough tripling of the national debt and a rough tripling of the deficit--we're talking something like 270 percent of what it was before Reagan took office. And no, taxes did NOT go down for everyone. Some of the tax deductions and credits--no one knows what a "loophole" actually is, so don't use the term with me--Reagan eliminated, like the non-mortgage interest deduction, caused the working class taxpayer's taxes to go up, sometimes significantly. And one of the business deductions Reagan eliminated, the deduction for "passive loss" that makes rental real estate profitable, killed an entire industry, the Savings and Loan Banks. Nothing Reagan did actually worked, and if your head wasn't shoved so far up Ayn Rand's ass you can tell what she had for dinner three days ago you would know that."

(1,521 posts)I had this argument for years with some of my right wing co-workers whenever they'd talk about how Reagan "lowered" taxes.
He lowered taxes a great deal for the higher earners. But those of us in the middle...well not so much.
My taxes went up...a lot. I actually moved up a bracket and I lost all my deductions. In 1987 I was damn near back to being able to do a 1040 EZ (except I don't think it existed back then). I didn't own a home and didn't have any kids.
So, don't ever try and tell me that Reagan gave me a tax cut. It was a very large tax increase because we went from something like 7 brackets to 3 and I was now in the middle bracket--a bracket that was much higher than my previous bracket. I also stopped being able to write off my credit card and auto loan interest.
I was not a happy guy in 1987 and I'll always remember.

(9,314 posts)of the deficit. So if one adds to those tax cuts, it is beyond comprehension how doing so improves the deficit. It would deepen it. Even the PEW Foundation has said the Bush* tax cuts are the number one driver (although other economic analysis such as the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities list it as #2):

Yes, the mortgage interest tax deduction (recommended by Bowles-Simpson, also called Simpson-Bowles plan) is something Romney is considering doing. That is why he won't reveal details of his "plan" before the election, not because he wants to have an open negotiating session with members of the people's representatives, but because no one would vote for him if he did so. That is in addition to privatizing Social Security, voucherizing Medicare and slashing Medicaid, privatizing the Post Office, instituting a national Right to Work law, repealing Roe v. Wade, and the list goes on and on ....

"We want to have this debate in public"
"So tell us which loopholes you're going to go after"
"We want to have this debate in public. We don't want it to be secret"
"That's what I'm saying. Tell the public what loopholes you are going to go after before they make up their minds"
"That's what we want to do."
Stephanopolous should not have let the interview proceed past that point until Ryan acknowledged his own cognitive dissonance and answered the question. He should have dug in his heels.

(2,749 posts)Why did he allow Ryan to get away with this crap? Isn't it his job as a journalist to call politicians on the carpet when they won't answer a question that is key to the election, especially when he is essentially saying they will let us know what the plan is AFTER they are (not), elected? What a pathetic interview this was.
Check out his body language. Head bowed most of the time and his eyes glancing up. He is lying and he needs approval because he's been a BADDDDD BOYYYYY!
Maybe he needs to go to the same hooker as 'Diaper' David Vitter of LA.

(3,596 posts)This is Lyin-Ryan.....they want to have this debate in public AFTER the election....yes AFTER they sit (they think) with solid majorities in the House and Senate so they can ramrod this crap down Americans' throats. They will do this, like Bush did with the Medicare RX program, in the stealth of night.
Like Obamacare was? I'm sorry...that bill was debated and debated and debated. The fact that few of those voting bothered to read the bill is not our problem.
You can tell he is lying. Watch his eyes. He is lying as surely as a catholic bishop says he didn't know his priest was molesting young boys and girls. Lies, lies, lies.

Right now, Romney is looking less like Gordon Gekko, who he patterned both his business practices and his haircut after, and more like Romania's last dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu, who created the economic and women's health programs Romney plans to implement.
And please note: Ceaucescu's reign of error ended when the Romanian Army captured him on December 21, 1989, subjected him to trial by kangaroo court on December 25, 1989, and executed him minutes later. We don't need any military coups in this country.

The best part of the Ceaucescus' execution was that they actually had to tell hundreds of soldiers they could NOT take part in the ceremonies. Apparently half the army volunteered for the honor of shooting Nicolae and Elena Ceaucescu.
