Sources: Akin may not really be in race for good

Source: CBS

*snip*

Akin pledged to carry on with his quest to unseat Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri. But his bid faced tall obstacles: a lack of money, a lack of party support and no assurance that his apologies would be enough to heal a self-inflicted political wound.

And sources tell CBS News his decision may not be final, reports CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews.

*snip*

But, says Andrews, "Two sources tell CBS News Aiken's real strategy here is to hang tough -- for now -- and see if that wins enough money and support to stay in the race. In others words-- his final decision to stay in--may not be final."

1. Well DUH !!! I think that became obvious when he was out pushing his 'donation' URL all day today

He is going hang on as long as he can so that he can get every penny out of everyone he can.

I think he is another Palin. Stay around as long as you can and make as much money as you can until you have to exit stage right.

After this race the only thing he will have is 'retirement'.

if the party doesn't find a way to displace him

2. Also, he might not be able to 'officially' drop out because he is not yet the 'certified' nominee

... Missouri allows a candidate who has been nominated by a political party to withdraw no later than 5:00 p.m. on the eleventh Tuesday prior to the general election which just happens to be this Tuesday. One caveat, the section requires that the withdrawing candidate have been nominated. However, a candidate is not nominated until the election results have been certified. Certification takes place within two weeks of the Secretary of State receiving the abstracts of returns for all of the counties and the counties can only submit the results after the county verification board meets, and the counties have two weeks to complete the verification process. In other words, Tuesday is the deadline for the counties to finish the verification process, and the Secretary of State does not need to certify the results until next Tuesday. So it is unclear that Representative Akin can officially withdraw at this point.

i think now it would have to go to court....Also, had he withdrew Tues by 5:00pm, think Missouri GOP could pick whomever they wanted as replacement...

Its definitely more complicated now
