Officials: Man criticized group before DC shooting
ERIC TUCKER, Associated Press, PETE YOST, Associated Press, By ERIC TUCKER and PETE YOST,
Updated 9:54 p.m., Wednesday, August 15, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Virginia man suspected of shooting and wounding a security guard at the Washington headquarters of a social conservative lobbying group on Wednesday made a negative reference about the organization's work before opening fire, a law enforcement official said.

Police said the man, identified as Floyd Lee Corkins II, entered the front lobby of the Family Research Council in downtown Washington around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, began arguing with a security guard and then shot him in the arm. Corkins, 28, was restrained by the wounded guard and others and was being held Wednesday night on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, the FBI said.

Authorities were interviewing Corkins to determine a reason for the shooting and were canvassing his neighborhood in Herndon, Va., outside Washington. TV news footage showed the suspect, a large man with a shaved head in an unbuttoned striped shirt, being led to a car in hand restraints.

Though authorities did not publicly reveal a motive, advocacy groups across the ideological spectrum condemned the violence, with some casting it as a hate crime. President Barack Obama was concerned about the wellbeing of the guard, a White House spokesman said, and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also said he was appalled.

scare me. I feel they are dangerous racists with a hidden agenda for poor and minority peoples. They are fascist with money as their god and no conscience. You can say and feel what you please. They, if elected will turn out enough people into the streets, elderly and others who depend on safety nets to end up killing more than the nazis could have dreamed of. I will always feel this way about two individuals who want to turn the clock back to the 50's and I know what that meant for a lot of people of my generation. I DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH MY WELL-BEING OR WITH THE WELL BEING OF PEOPLE WITH LESS MONEY THAN THE class they belong to. Hyperbolic? Fine. You're entitled to throw around words you don't understand. I won't back off anything I have said.

You never learned a thing about the Nazis. For one thing, they were socialists. They are big on the government running everything. The exact opposite of the Tea Party.

You've just heard a slogan and you run with it with no understanding like a schoolyard kid.

There is enough wrong with the Tea Party and the Republicans and the neocons and the con-cons that you don't have to make stuff up.

They certainly were socialists. Government ownership and direction of industry, ...

... lots of social programs (think Hitler youth) which of course had a double purpose of pushing the government agenda.

Once they had power they shifted to a pure power fascist totalitarian mode.

Rightwing / leftwing is an artificial dichotomy that makes little sense when all the dimensions are analyzed.

And equating the tea party with Nazism makes even less sense. Sure, they have fascistic and authoritarian tendencies, but they would have been squashed by the Nazis. They better watch out because their own platforms would squeeze them out of existence. They don't understand which side of their bread is buttered.

Ultimately the Nazis were self-organized and purposeful. The tea party are creations of the Kochs and other puppeteers and fight all the time between themselves between the social conservatives and the fiscal conservatives and the anti-mormon bigots, etc.

Get a clue about Godwin's law. You just wanted to sabotage the discussion here by tossing in a Nazi.

When people run about throwing around the Nazi word because it is so emotive, they undermine the people who are trying to deal with reality.

There is more than enough to criticize about Republicans and tea parties (there's at least three) without polluting the water with unfounded charges. Yes, some tea baggers are racist. That doesn't make them or their party Nazi. Yes, some tea baggers are right wing authoritarians. That doesn't make them Nazi.

Read up on Godwin's law and you can kill discussions even better than you are now.

I've studied THE NAZI PARTY all my life. The tea party is racist, homophobic, exclusive to white males and I am very sorry if I offended you and your party affiliations. Please forgive me I am sorry you can't see the forest for the trees and the tea party idiots for who they are. You go study your history and try to show some restraint. Of course the nazis were socialist , so! They were also, racist, anti-jewish and white male exclusive. I'VE been around long enough to smell a racist, dangerous group of people(teabaggers) when I smell them. Get a clue.

starting with Giffords, Martin, the rest up to the PEACEFUL Sikhs, the shooter has been right wing reactionaries ridding the world of liberals and people with pigment in their skin. I think it's not a stretch to put this guy in the same group. Mittflip, Aynryan and Annie have contributed to this violence by painting our President black and liberal. Although I think the place he shot up has conservative leanings, so what's up with that So I'm gripping...

It happens in families of all political and apolitical stripes. It isn't really all that surprising we have a problem with gun violence. What shocks me is how easy it is for even mentally unstable people to get guns. I don't think the victims of gun violence care if the shooter is liberal or conservative it's probably the farthest question in their mind. That being said we can do a lot better ie mental health services and keeping guns out of the hands of unstable people.
