Mitt Romney Set To Pick Paul Ryan As Running Mate

Source: huffingtonpost.com

NORFOLK, Va. -– Mitt Romney will announce Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as his running mate on Saturday, according to two sources with knowledge of the decision.

Ryan is a bold pick who will energize the Republican Party, but putting him on the ticket is fraught with risk and instantly puts Ryan's budget plan front and center in the 2012 campaign.

We now know the polls are right. Romney knows he is behind. He knows his path to 270 is very difficult.(Nate Silver currently gives him about a 30% chance of winning.) Therefore he is rolling the dice. With safe candidates in battle-ground states (like Rob Portman) available, the fact that Romney has to gamble this heavily to get back in the race is really telling.

Ryan is not a Governor. He is not a Senator. He has never held a Presidential cabinet position. He is a member of the House of Representatives. An area of government that in modern times does not directly lead to the Presidency.

This is Geraldine Ferraro 1984. Of course it won't be called this, because Ryan is a man and therefore will be viewed as more credible. Still, I can't believe the desperation. Clearly, Romney's internal numbers are as bad as I think they are.

To give you an idea of the difference between the House and the Senate.

The Senate used an ivory gavel since 1789 until Richard Nixon broke it in 1954 when he was Vice President. The original was repaired but is only carried as a symbol with it's replacement in a special box brought out solemnly by a page.

[img][/img]

In the House they have boxes of gavels because they break them constantly.

I think Ryan was seen as a potential game-changer, much like Palin was seen as a game-changer by John McCain. He's perceived as a young, dynamic, charismatic figure with the potential to carry the standard for the party in the future. But the way to defeat him was authored by none other than Paul Ryan himself - his budget proposal, the "Path To Austerity" if he were being truly honest.

This was a classic, hail-mary-pass choice, one made at the end of the first half when a team is getting it's ass kicked and needs a jolt to awaken them from their death trance.

IF we get out the vote, we can send him back to Wisconsin where be belongs.

This one is exceptional. Not quite as fun as Bachmann, but still fun. And since this race really ended the day Rmoney was nominated, it's nice to get a mouse to bat around. Something to keep the boredom factor down for the next few months.

Actually, this race was pretty well never even happening before the 1% ken doll got the nomination. None of the Primary contenders were going to win. He's actually been more fun than I expected. I figured he would be stiff but not gaffe prone. I'm happy to be wrong.

I agree that Palin would have been more losery but that amount of losingness only comes around once in a Palincentury.

If this is really true, it won't be close enough to steal it. I'm well aware of the things Pugs have done to intimidate and even "lose" ballots but that only works (so far) if it's close. This won't be.

And something I'm learning in my recovery work is that worrying doesn't change the outcome, it only floods my body with chemicals that in large quantities and in the absence of a tiger chasing me, are hurting my insides. And not changing anything outside. So, there's that.

Elections in the US stopped being on the up and up probably before you and I were born. It's gotten worse, no question. But, again, worry only hurts your insides.

His family received Social Security survivor benefits after his father died when he was a teenager. Since then, of course, he's become a 1%er - and now gets special tax credits for his house, it's so damn fancy:

In any way that will come to matter to the people whose lives his policies will make harder and more miserable, Paul Ryan is still the high-school kid living off Social Security survivor benefits and reading Ayn Rand by flashlight under the sheets. Instead, he's a guy pretending to be something he's not, and doing so back in Janesville in a very swell Georgian mansion, which just happens to be listed on the National Register Of Historic Places.

Which, among other things, means that Paul Ryan, who lies awake at night worrying that The Deficit will come and eat our grandchildren, lives in a house overseen by the National Park Service, which means that he qualifies for a 20 percent investment tax credit for the house he lives in. Of course, his "budget" would largely decimate the NPS, but that would be only those parts of it enjoyed by other people. Yes, Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny starver, has done very well by the federal government that he seeks to dismantle. Come to think of it, so has Willard Romney, although we may never know exactly how well he's done by it. It turns out this is a match made in heaven, after all.

Of course, if the tax credit for his current house is under threat, it's OK - he's aiming to move into even fancier accommodation, entirely paid for by the taxpayer. But he still loves him some Ayn Rand.

Should an Ayn Randian Vice President live in quarters paid for out of taxes?

Or shouldn't he build a fortress for himself and his family, say on the National Mall with his own hands? Wouldn't that be a more Randian thing to do? Stand on his own two feet and not depend on the government for his house?

What's more. Do we have to pay these Ayn Rand followers salaries? Why? Aren't they supposed to be chieftains of industry who take nothing from the government?

here that this is another massive screwup for RMoney. But...on intrade, over the last hour, both Obama's re-election and Romney's election chances are equally down 1%.

In other words, the betting market is not yet sure how to evaluate this news, which is a bit baffling to me but it is giving me reason to pause my celebrating.

edit: actually NEVERMIND. I misread the graphs. Since Midnight CST, Obama is up .5% and RMoney is down .9%.

Well maybe not. If Sarah Palin was an apolitical person and my neighbor next door - I would just think she is one of those wacky characters who can be entertaining in small to moderate doses. Paul Ryan has about as much personality as -- hmm, well Mitt Romney - and his strongest point of name recognition is as the person who wants to dismantle Social Security, Medicare and every other program that the elderly and disabled and everyone else depends on.

Paul Ryan wrote the very playbook that will be used to defeat him and the MittWitt. He'll go on a major charm offensive with the MSM, and that may affect the numbers a bit. But considering Team Obama's rapid responses to the MittWit's gaffes, plus the ad that was released even before the official nomination, he's going to find that he's out of his league. I'm hoping that all of this exposure will even cost him his congressional seat - in which case he'll likely move on to K Street and make a nice little living for himself as a lobbyist-shill.

Watch how Biden handles him in the veep debate. Ryand is toast.

Found THIS link while ghosting your....well um....not sure what you call that place. At any rate, glad that most of you liked the Ryan pick. At least we agree on two things: Paul Ryan does not scare us and mitt the twit was a horrible choice to go up against President Obama.

I know that most of you do not believe in democracy. If you did you would be outraged that a party, (that would be YOUR party), is scrubbing millions of our fellow Americans off of the voting rolls. THESE ARE LEGAL LEGITIMATE VOTERS!

The ONLY way your mob has a chance against the will of WE THE PEOPLE is to cheat, in other words to bypass our democracy. The GOP knows that Romney/Ryan can not even come close to winning without cheating. They destroy our democracy in order to make this race even close, does that concern you? Don't bother, I already know the answer.

Do you know who Paul Weyrich is? He co-founded the Heritage Foundation. I am sure you know what that is. He is considered to also be one of the founders of todays conservative movement He agreed with you when it comes to democracy, specifically about legitimate voters being able to vote. Here are his very words on the topic:

http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DWPsl_TuFdes&v=WPsl_TuFdes&gl=US

That then is our difference. We support democracy, we welcome all, including you into our democracy. You do not support democracy.

osama bin laden did not support democracy, as a matter of fact, according to you guys he hated us for it. When it comes to democracy, you are either with us or you are with the terrorists.

82. The zombie-eyed granny-starver from Wisconsin
Sat Aug 11, 2012, 05:15 AM

Charles Pierce, in Esquire, has had Ryan pegged for months. That description of him is perfect (he has less soul than Mitt Romney, and that's quite an acheivement), and I think 'ZEGS' needs to become the standard appellation over the next 3 months (after which, his career will be over, apart from bitter sniping from a wingnut welfare job at the AEI or similar, and increasing rare spots on Fox News). Mr. Pierce values his weekends off, and normally doesn't post to his blog on them; I hope he had this pre-written, just in case:

Make no mistake. In his decision to make Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny-starver from Wisconsin, his running mate, Romney finally surrendered the tattered remnants of his soul not only to the extreme base of his party, but also to extremist economic policies, and to an extremist view of the country he seeks to lead. This is unimaginable to those of us who lived under Romney's barely perceptible stewardship of the Commonwealth (God save it!). If he'd even hinted that he agreed with a fraction of a smidgen of a portion of the policies on which Ryan has built his career, Romney would have been hanging from the Sacred Cod by the middle of 2005. And it's hard not to notice that the way the decision got leaked -- in the dead of a Friday night, with the Olympics still going on, after two weeks in which Romney and his campaign had demonstrated all the political skills of a handball -- fairly dripped with flopsweat.

(And how'd you like to be poor Tim Pawlenty, being told by Tagg Romney that he'll be riding in the roof carrier to Iowa again, with nothing in his future except, maybe, a couple of bucks at Christmas.)

Which is not to say this isn't a shrewd move. In one great swoop, he has recaptured a good portion of the elite political media, which has been crushing on Ryan's "courage" to take on the "tough choices" -- none of which, it should be pointed out, likely will affect Ryan, who's already got himself an education out of the social safety net he now intends to shred, and certainly will never affect the haircut at the top of the ticket, or his great-grandchildren, for all that -- and the coverage of the pick in the middle of the night last night showed that many of our finer chattering heads are already practicing tying the stem of the cherry with their tongues in preparation for covering the new Republican ticket. On CNN, at about 1:35 this morning, Wolf Blitzer was already warning Democrats not to get too cocky in the face of Paul Ryan's mighty intellect. "In 1980," Wolf told us, "Democrats were high-fiving when the Republicans nominated Ronald Reagan."
...
Paul Ryan is an authentically dangerous zealot. He does not want to reform entitlements. He wants to eliminate them. He wants to eliminate them because he doesn't believe they are a legitimate function of government. He is a smiling, aw-shucks murderer of opportunity, a creator of dystopias in which he never will have to live. This now is an argument not over what kind of political commonwealth we will have, but rather whether or not we will have one at all, because Paul Ryan does not believe in the most primary institution of that commonwealth -- our government. The first three words of the Preamble to the Constitution make a lie out of every speech he's ever given. He looks at the country and sees its government as an something alien that is holding down the individual entrepreneurial genius of 200 million people, and not as their creation, and the vehicle through which that genius can be channelled for the general welfare. In the lengthy -- and now, very prescient -- profile of Ryan that ran in The New Yorker this week, Ryan Lizza pinned him down on this very point. Ryan responded in fluent Weaselspeak.
