Police arrest ex-girlfriend of gunman in Sikh killings

Source: USA Today

South Milwaukee police have arrested the ex-girlfriend of the man believed to be the gunman in a shooting rampage at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin Sunday that left seven people, including the suspect, Wade Michael Page, dead.

Misty Cook, a 31-year-old nursing student, is tentatively facing a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, the Associated Press reports, quoting South Milwaukee police. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes that Cook has a previous felony conviction.

There was no immediate indication that Cook's arrest is linked to the shooting Sunday in Oak Creek that also left three people injured, including a police officer.

Before their breakup in June, Cook and Page lived in a South Milwaukee duplex, WISN-TV news reports.

Misty Cook, a former girlfriend of Wade Page, the man authorities say killed six people in a Sikh temple in Milwaukee before being gunned down, is seen here, far right, wearing a T-shirt with the name of the extremist right-wing group Volksfront.

Sikh temple shooting: Gunman's ex-girlfriend arrested
An unauthorized gun is found at the residence of Misty Cook, who reportedly has ties to white supremacist groups.

¬snip¬
Misty Cook, a 31-year-old waitress and nursing student with reported ties to white supremacist organizations, was arrested Tuesday in a joint investigation with the FBI on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Wade Michael Page, the gunman shot dead by police at the temple Sunday, had lived with her until moving to a separate residence a few weeks ago.

¬snip¬

Cook shared Page's interest in the white power movement and was active in at least two neo-Nazi organizations, according to the Anti-Defamation League, which monitors hate groups. The ADL had information on Page and Cook going back several years, and ADL researchers said Page appeared to have moved to Wisconsin to be with her.

Cook sent a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday, saying she could not comment and asking for privacy. "If I could say something to ease the pain of the victims and their families, I would gladly do so," she wrote. "Unfortunately, words do not begin to heal the pain they are going through."

The sentence (The) white supremacist (is) dumb is perfectly good, since dumb is simply the object of the sentence in which white supremacist is the subject. It may not tell us anything we don't already know, but there's really nothing wrong with it.

Now, there is something wrong with the sentence Misty is a dumb white supremacist since dumb is an adjective modifying white supremacist and is therefore redundant. It's not a big thing, either, unless you were my third grade teacher.

I hope that clarifies the issue.

From what I understand, she was in possession of a gun as a felon--that was her issue (or the excuse they used to arrest her).

Cook was taken into custody on the grounds that she is prohibited from having a gun as a convicted felon, a federal law enforcement official said. Cook was convicted in 2002 for fleeing and eluding a traffic officer.

Milwaukee police released a statement Tuesday after the arrest of Misty Cook, saying, "In a joint investigation with the FBI, the South Milwaukee Police Department has arrested Misty Cook on the crime of felon in possession of a firearm. Charges will be sought through the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office."

There's no indication Cook was involved with the attack. Much like her ex-boyfriend, according to the Anti-Defamation League, Cook was involved in white supremacy. The ADL has photos of Cook wearing a T-shirt with the name of the extremist right-wing group Volksfront. The group said that Cook had not been involved since 2008.

that racism is a mental illness. since this shooting so-called ex-racist admitted that they
have to commit crimes in order to join those kinds of organizations.

So why are they allowed to buy or keep their guns? they are mental ill and admit to having
committed crimes? oh yea we have our own taliban right here in amerakkka.
I guess we have to start locking down the churches and hospitals with metal detector doors.

With Wisconsin's new incredibly permissive gun laws, it's damn near impossible to bar anyone but a convicted felon from legally owning a gun.

I have no idea whether or not federal firearms laws have stopped massacres and other gun crimes but I'm reasonably certain that they have. Since the crimes didn't occur we don't hear about them. I'd be interested to hear what a federal official had to say. I suspect that the ATF and FBI know of numerous situations that were defused because they were able to enforce federal laws. Who knows what would have happened without intervention? Nobody can say for sure.

He wasn't diagnosed with mental illness before this. And if he wasn't convicted of anything before this he'd have a clean record.

So is your point that people who state while they're purchasing the gun that they intend to use it in a crime ought to be barred from owning one? Because I'm pretty sure that never happens.

Nursing schools will ask about your background and will do a background check and a case-by-case decision based on type of offense, how much time has passed since offense and what type of restitution. State boards of nursing will be thorough and more unforgiving. A military buddy of mine who was a 91 C (LVN) was accepted to RN school and graduated on the president's honor roll, but was denied to take the NCLEX-RN exam for licensure. He'd committed shoplifting, vandalism and D/D as a teen that the military overlooked, but the Texas State Board of Nursing wasn't going to. But, other states were willing to let him to sit for the exam, so he was given an assignment at another military hospital in another state. A civilian nurse would have gone through all that for nothing. Having said that, in such a high profile case involving a mass shooting stemming from a hate crime, this woman, with her "strong association with the white supremacist movement" will probably, hopefully, not be allowed to remain in nursing school.
