Petition about Melania Trump surges in popularity
Source: MSN/CBS News
A Change.org petition about first lady Melania Trump continues to explode in popularity, attracting over 230,000 signatures and becoming the sites most signed campaign this week. The petition calls for her to either move to the White House or personally pay for her New York City security expenses.
The U.S. taxpayer is paying an exorbitant amount of money to protect the First Lady in Trump Tower, located in New York City, the petition reads. As to help relieve the national debt, this expense yields no positive results for the nation and should be cut from being funded.
There are thousands of responses on the petitions page, as commenters air grievance after grievance about what they believe to be a misuse of taxpayer dollars.
Why should the U.S. taxpayer carry the burden for her security away from the [White House]? one person asked on the site.

(15,543 posts)Why are republican billionaires asking US taxpayers to fund their luxury high life styles of excess consumption?
Can't they afford to pay their own way? Do they have to cut Meals on Wheels, and Heat for Elders (LIHEAP) to pay for hoity-toity fatcat republican billionaire special treatment?
Kinda sucks. Sucks bigly.
Why are republicans screwing the American taxpayers to pamper their republican Tax-&-Draft Dodger-in-Chief and his harem?

(4,835 posts)that Camp David is in existence to provide a secure meeting place for foreign dignitaries. We pay an exorbitant amount of money for it even though it is not being used. It is a military installation and secure. It is very expensive to provide that level of security at Mar-a-Lago.

"I just shoved a bowling ball out my bits, come and f* me, I'm so sexy" NOT. And any man demanding sex without letting her heal is a selfish cad.
IMO of course.

(26,291 posts)I don't honestly see the problem however Donald should reimburse the city for the added security costs out of his own considerable pockets (a compensation for having such tiny hands no doubt) or the city should stop providing extra security if he refuses.

(4,973 posts)They could hire the best tutors in the world and bring them to the white house and it would cost less than this. He should have thought of the school issue before he ran for president. Also, if my company decides they need to move me to another city because they don't need me here, they don't give a F%^& about where my kids attend school. So print that as Spicey would say.

(23,295 posts)only staying there so the kid can finish the school year? Really? I don't believe she will move into the WH. There will be excuse after excuse. She can't stand to be around the orange faced clown.

(47,479 posts)Obviously, the secret service has to go where he does and it often included their homes away from home. Except I don't remember the Clintons ever going back to Little Rock or the Obamas to Hyde Park.
But Whiny Donny's home away from home so far has been in Florida, right?

(3,335 posts)worth. However, the Obama's and every First Family in my lifetime have uprooted and relocated their minor children to Wash DC and the White House, and they seemed to make the adjustment. It had to be difficult for them to leave friends and relationships behind, but this was not new and the families knew during the year or more spent campaigning, this is what came with the job their father was seeking. Most of these children were also seen on the campaign trail and its not like their parents hadn't made any sacrifices previously for the political offices they sought. I recall Rick Santorum had 8 children all still living at home when he ran for President whom they brought with them on the campaign trail and Marco Rubio had 3 young children who were there at every primary victory or loss. Every political family uses their children as Props when it's in the candidates interest. Trump's family seems to act like they are royalty and to follow the established norm of moving into the WH is somehow beneath them. I've said it all along, that I don't think that Melania and Baron will ever move into the WH. I personally think that their marriage is a sham and the magazine articles I've read about her, all with her permission and designed to portray her in a favorable light seemed to focus on her superficiality and how she personally spends all her time shopping, tanning, beautifying and pampering herself, and lunching with friends when she is not dropping off or picking up Baron from school.
There was nothing about volunteering or support for any organizations that support the needy. After the inauguration it was reported that she spent about a half an hour at a school reading to children. What was covered by the press seemed awkward and forced which seems weird, because she's made her living being in the spot-light prior to marrying Trump. You'd think being down to earth would come more naturally for her since she hasn't been a pampered princess all her life. Her currently lifestyle is actually what seems fake and superficial.

(1,105 posts)The White House is the official residence of the President and his/her family. If a President and/or their family chooses to live elsewhere, that's fine, but they need to pay for making that choice. The party of personal responsibility should endorse and require that sort of behavior.

(21,716 posts)If she doesn't move down in June or July, then I have a problem with it. Personally, I don't think she is moving to DC. I don't agree that the funding should be cut, he is President after all darn-it, but he should reimburse the cost.

(27,811 posts)I really don't buy that as an excuse, though I get your point about seeing if they're telling the truth about this. They don't seem truthful about much, so I'm not holding my breath.

(21,716 posts)But Obama was expected to win, so they had more time to plan that. Nobody thought tRump was going to win, including the Donald. So I will give them until June/July, but I'm not holding my breath either. I don't think Melania wants to come to DC

"the petition will be delivered as a letter to Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)...Though liberal favorites, neither Sanders nor Warren are on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, which oversees the U.S. Secret Service budget."
Here is a list of Democrats who are on that committee, and who also should get a copy of the petition, when it reaches the petition goal of 300,000 signatures.
- Ranking member Jon Tester (D-Montana)
- Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
- Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
- Patty Murray (D-Washington)
- Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)
- Joe Manchin (D-W-VA)
If any of these are your senator, you should call them at 202-224-2131 or send them an e-mail.
K&R, thanks for posting

(14,173 posts)Can you imagine
if in Obama's first months, Michelle decided to stay in whatever home they were living in with the girls, demanding the extra cost involved in securing that place as well.
The party of family values and their voters sure don't seem much concerned with this aspect either.
