Trump Said to Issue Far-Reaching Reversal of Obama Climate Push
Source: Bloomberg
President Donald Trump is set to sign a sweeping executive order on Tuesday aimed at promoting domestic oil, coal and natural gas by reversing much of his predecessors efforts to address climate change.
The document lays out a broad blueprint for the Trump administration to dismantle the architecture that former President Barack Obama built to combat the phenomenon, according to details shared with Bloomberg News. Some of the changes would happen immediately, while others would take years to complete.
The order will compel federal agencies to quickly identify any actions that could burden the production or use of domestic energy resources, including nuclear power, and then work to suspend, revise or rescind the policies unless they are legally mandated, are necessary for the public interest or promote development.
It also will toss out two Obama-era directives that gave consideration of climate change a prominent role in federal rule making. One advised government agencies to factor climate change into environmental reviews, such as those governing where oil drilling should take place. The other, called the social cost of carbon, is a metric reflecting the potential economic damage from climate change that was used by the Obama administration to justify a suite of regulations.

I kind of don't get his obsession with Obama. I mean, Trump isn't your garden variety hater Repub Congressman who has been vowing to stop Obama for 8 years. He never really ran against Obama for anything, so there isn't the "retribution on the enemy" thing. The only thing Obama ever did to Trump was be born in the US. And I never quite got his original drive to prove Obama wasn't born here. Trump normally isn't one to go after things that don't affect him personally. Somehow I don't see Obama as even a blip on the Trump radar, seeing as how that radar is normally only sensitive to personal threats. Real or perceived.

Don't try to use rational thought on irrational behavior. It's a waste of energy. It's not something you can figure out. He's a damaged individual and has been all of his life. I bet there are a lot of dirty secrets in his upbringing.

(9,314 posts)In 1935, the Supreme Court overturned five of President Franklin Roosevelt's executive orders (6199, 6204, 6256, 6284, 6855). Executive Order 12954, issued by President Bill Clinton in 1995, attempted to prevent the federal government from contracting with organizations that had strike-breakers on the payroll; a federal appeals court subsequently ruled that the order conflicted with the National Labor Relations Act, and invalidated the order.[21][22]
Congress has the power to overturn an executive order by passing legislation that invalidates it. Congress can also refuse to provide funding necessary to carry out certain policy measures contained with the order or to legitimize policy mechanisms. In the case of the former, the president retains the power to veto such a decision; however, the Congress may override a veto with a two-thirds majority to end an executive order. It has been argued that a congressional override of an executive order is a nearly impossible event, due to the supermajority vote required and the fact that such a vote leaves individual lawmakers vulnerable to political criticism.[23]
On July 30, 2014, the Republican-led House of Representatives approved a resolution authorizing Speaker of the House John Boehner to sue President Barack Obama over claims that he exceeded his executive authority in changing a key provision of the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare" on his own[24] and over what Republicans claimed had been "inadequate enforcement of the health care law", which Republican lawmakers opposed. In particular, Republicans "objected that the Obama administration delayed some parts of the law, particularly the mandate on employers who do not provide health care coverage".[25] The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on November 21, 2014.[26]
Maybe Congress should start thinking about this....

(37,648 posts)The price of oil is in the gutter because of too much oil on the market. Price of oil is good in many ways, but it's a big piece of our economy, and the low price of oil is killing the oil companies. Even Exxon is having difficulty.
I guess this means smog will start building up again, and the waterways and lakes will get even worse than they are now.

(3,495 posts)Ha! Coal and nuclear power are more expensive than gas right now. The net effect of more power from these sources is higher electric rates, especially for residential consumers. More oil to market will suppress prices unless there is an uptick in demand. Low or falling oil prices are going to swallow lots of investment money just like it did in 2014 and 2015.
Do your part to fight this by doing more with less (energy).

A view of a power plant in New York, N.Y. President Trumps executive order will tell the EPA to begin rewriting the 2015 regulation that limits greenhouse-gas emissions from existing power plants. (Justin Lane/EPA)
President Trump will take the most significant step yet in obliterating his predecessors environmental record Tuesday, instructing federal regulators to rewrite key rules curbing U.S. carbon emissions.
The sweeping executive order also seeks to lift a moratorium on federal coal leasing and remove the requirement that federal officials consider the impact of climate change when making decisions.
The order sends an unmistakable signal that just as President Barack Obama sought to weave climate considerations into every aspect of the federal government, Trump is hoping to rip that approach out by its roots.
This policy is in keeping with President Trumps desire to make the United States energy independent, said a senior administration official who briefed reporters on the directive Monday evening and asked for anonymity to speak in advance of the announcement. When it comes to climate change, we want to take our course and do it in our own form and fashion.................
