OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) — An 18-year-old Louisiana man has been arrested for what authorities say were inappropriate text messages to a 14-year-old girl — including, "You better be worth risking going to jail."

The St. Landry Parish sheriff's spokesman, Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux, says George Thomas Wiley III of Krotz Springs is free on $13,500 bond after his arrest Thursday on charges including computer-aided solicitation of a minor.

Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says in a news release that a parent called detectives after checking the girl's text messages.

Guidroz says the jail comment came after a question about the girl's age.

respects a child himself. At that age he could literally be in high-school with this 14 year old. If he were still a year younger, he wouldn't be facing a federal crime, although I might be wrong about that since laws are so fucked up even minors having sex with people their own age have occasionally been charged for shit... We have such a punitive society. Without knowing him(that is, I don't know all the details of this case), I'd guess what he probably needs is guidance and counseling, not a prison sentence. I get it, he was soliciting her over the internet and that sets off all flags of creepy and predatory, and I also know we have to draw the line of adulthood somewhere and we have to enforce that line...

I just don't think the way we do things actually makes for a healthier and safer society. I don't think if this kid goes to jail he's going to come out better adjusted and less a risk to others.

It does come off creepy/predatory, but on the other hand, if he were a few months younger he'd be a minor too! So it's pretty fucked up either way. It does seem that even minors nowadays get really harsh punishments so even if he were still 17 he'd probably be in deep trouble regardless.

so he deserves to get screwed without getting laid. No, I don't think he deserves a lengthy prison sentence, an ankle bracelet with strict probation and registry as a sex offender for the term a fully adult male would get will do nicely. If he doesn't hustle little girls during the term of his registry, it can be dropped.

He can vote (a right progressives fought to get 18 year olds).
He can drive (and has been able to for several years)
He can enter into legally binding contracts.

Do you think this 18 year old should face trial as a juvenile?http://wtop.com/virginia/2016/01/virginia-tech-student-charged-in-death-of-13-year-old-girl/slide/1/

This guy knew what he was doing. He knew it was illegal. He should face the consequences.

He could even tote a gun and shoot people on a battlefield, but...... None of that instantly qualifies him as being an ADULT mentally. Even if he DID know of the possible consequences, having a vote, a license, and being legally able to enter into a contract DOES NOT automatically afford him (or a HER if the case be) responsible adult behavior.
I'm not saying he isn't responsible for his actions, but I AM saying that for society to just arbitrarily establish points of achievement does not take into account that not everyone comes out of the exact same cookie cutter.

THis is nothing more than a local crime story. LBN would be full of nothing but this kind of stuff if allowed.
