US inquiries into Russian election hacking include three FBI probes

Source: Reuters

18 FEB 2017 AT 13:21 ET

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is pursuing at least three separate probes relating to alleged Russian hacking of the U.S. presidential elections, according to five current and former government officials with direct knowledge of the situation.

While the fact that the FBI is investigating had been reported previously by the New York Times and other media, these officials shed new light on both the precise number of inquires and their focus.

The FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, which runs many cyber security investigations, is trying to identify the people behind breaches of the Democratic National Committee’s computer systems, the officials said. Those breaches, in 2015 and the first half of 2016, exposed the internal communications of party officials as the Democratic nominating convention got underway and helped undermine support for Hillary Clinton.

The Pittsburgh case has progressed furthest, but Justice Department officials in Washington believe there is not enough clear evidence yet for an indictment, two of the sources said.

I am not impressed with this. Have they identified the hackers? Do they have a network in the US?

BC/BC reported hacks of their provider network months ago. Sure, the wheels of justice move slowly, as they should. It should embrass Comey that he has not tracked down any modern day cyber bandit. Unless you consider the Clinton witch hunts as your evidence of efficacy.

I could say more, but, I have a family to consider.

He has put himself in bed with traitors and has refused to release the info. We all knew before the election that the Russians hacked us, though the DNC would have never known if they hadn't sent the email.

I wonder how long it will take Sessions to shut it down.

APT 28 and APT 29 are two known Russian government sponsored Hacking groups. They have been tied into the breaches at the DNC, and Podesta's mail among other places.

By selectively releasing the "dirt" of only one side, the DNC, they suppressed the traditional unification around the Democratic nominee.

To win an Electoral College win, this only needed to happen in a few states. The normally blue states of MI, WI, and PA. 77,000 votes is all he won by. (less than 1/10th of one percent of all votes)

Those who chose not to unify around HRC? Where did they go? They stayed home, went for Stein or Johnson. Both Stein and Johnson each has more votes than 45's margin over HRC in each of those states.

The election was rigged.

You're kidding right? The report you link to is the declassified report on the Russian influence campaign. For obvious reasons (even though I know it sucks for us to admit it often) the intel community can't release to the public a full report with classified information detailing everything they know and how they know it. The nature of this investigation guarantees that much will remain secret and for longer than we all would like.

This report is also more than a month old, in that time more details have continued to leak out to the press. But honestly i don't get how you could call the evidence underwhelming, even republicans in congress now admit the Russians involvement and many even acknowledge the motive (others rather not talk about it.. because they know the answer makes them look bad). Having even a rudimentary understanding of American politics should tell you republicans would not just admit these facts without considerable evidence as the facts help to instill the impression that the republican president is not legitimate. There's been reports detailing Russian communications that US intelligence intercepted where Russian officials discuss their scheme and its purpose. I mean if that doesn't convince you or "underwhelms" you than I don't know what would satisfy you.

along with millions of others. Prosecutions for war crimes? ZERO

Then, they lied us into Iraq (over my strenuous objections)
Prosecutions for lying! Again, ZERO

One cannot be too skeptical when it comes to matters of war and peace.

Here is a good essay by the Intel Professionals for Sanity .
I have met a number of them . .

but the NSA is not saying it was a leak vs. a hack. And remember, the high-level NSA toolkit was stolen and sold on the black market. That is what allowed the NSA to spy on practically all communications undetected for years.

We don't know how many other countries now have access to the toolkit, but a newly wealthy Putin would likely be high on the list.
