In North Dakota, it could become legal to hit a protester with your car

Source: Los Angeles Times

(F)or months, opponents of the proposed $3.8-billion Dakota Access pipeline waged protests. They established a prayer camp and strung banners between trees. At times, they blocked roads and construction sites. They faced attack dogs, pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets and water sprays that turned to ice on their skin.

“We wouldn’t have been able to delay construction to this point if it wasn’t for us taking to the streets,” said Dallas Goldtooth, an activist with the Indigenous Environmental Network who helped coordinate the Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s months-long protests in North Dakota.

But a bill introduced last month in the North Dakota legislature could make the obstacles to protest even more formidable. The bill, still in committee, would make it legal for drivers to run over protesters who are standing in a roadway, clearing drivers of any liability, as long as their action was “unintentional.”

The bill is just one of a raft of new pieces of legislation that have been introduced around the country to discourage or criminalize protest — even as large demonstrations over environmental issues, police shootings and the policies of President Trump have been surging across the country.

That's right, ND thinks it's okay to murder someone if he or she is protesting Dump's executive orders and nominations.

It's getting real. Protests around the country have been breaking records. They've been about various issues, but all clearly against the Trump administration. Look for other states to follow ND's "example."

And they wonder why people protest.

I've also heard Trumpers think it's already within their legal rights to run over anyone who's not on a crosswalk, so they fantasize about running over protestors blocking the highway. Trumpers often drive big SUVs and pickup trucks with lots of power.

Just saying.

A stand-your-ground law (sometimes called "line in the sand" or "no duty to retreat" law) is a justification in a criminal case, whereby a defendant can "stand their ground" and use otherwise unlawful force without retreating, in order to protect and defend themselves or others against threats or perceived threats.

that do anything from condoning murder of protesters who block traffic to imprisoning them as felons to crippling them with economic fines. One state would go after anyone who obscures his identity with a mask, or whatever, but I'm guessing a hoodie would qualify if the face were kept down.

Of course, extremist creeps always have introduced outrageous bills to get attention. It's what the rest do with them that matters. The outrage would be if any of these were enacted.

creating a hazard, and tragically, sooner or later someone's going to get killed doing it. I just hope it's not a kid.

This is especially true when vehicles are trapped and things get violent, which is happening in more than one place.
