Hours after violence and vandalism on campus forced the cancellation of an appearance by Breitbart News commentator Milo Yiannopoulos at UC Berkeley, President Trump weighed in on the events:
Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?
Among the immediate reactions to the presidents tweet-threat, a statement from Rep. Barbara Lee, whose district includes Berkeley:
Rep. Barbara Lee ✔ @RepBarbaraLee
Pres. Trump doesnt have a license to blackmail universities. Hes the president, not a dictator, & his empty threats are an abuse of power.

Ironic that the very same freedom of speech that gave rise to hate radio and hate internet news sites like Brietbart and gave the hate speech such strength is being threatened now that the hate mongers are in the WH.

The Berkeley College Republicans booked Yiannopolous, a self-proclaimed gay internet troll who refers to Trump as daddy and championed his candidacy. UC Berkeley officials, citing the First Amendment and campus tradition of free speech, allowed the event to go forward despite widespread criticism that Yiannopolous commentary is frequently racist, misogynist and anti-Muslim.

The only thing it seems to do is give this little pissant a bigger microphone. And make us look stupid to moderates who might be more sympathetic to liberal positions

reasons not to protest.
There does seem to be a slight trend of despair and fatalism
in all this.
In fact, though, our protests are making a difference, even if
sometimes it doesn't feel like it.
And they need to grow, keep on growing, and stay consistent
if we ever hope this nation to regain its sanity.

(13,895 posts)Old fascist/commie ploy. Turn a peaceful display into a riot and discredit the opposition.. I wish they "caught" some of the provocateurs and outed them.. This just reeks of a James O'Keefe operation.

(1,002 posts)The image of that little girl killed in Доналд Трамп's first military strike won't leave my mind. Let's pull all federal funds from the White House. Rep Barbara Lee did make a big mistake using the "C" word, though - "climate." Tsk, tsk, tsk...
