Republicans Go Largely Silent As Trump Bars Refugees And Immigrants From U.S.
Source: Huffington Post
Thats just a sampling of dozens of statements being fired out by Democrats. On the Republican side, the reaction is significantly different: silence.
GOP lawmakers, who now control both chambers of Congress, have gone quiet in response to the presidents unilateral action that bans Syrian refugee resettlement in the U.S. indefinitely, shuts down the nations entire refugee program for 120 days, and bars all immigrants and visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days.
As The New York Times Glenn Thrush observed on Twitter, Republicans havent been this quiet since the last positive jobs report under Obama. HuffPost spotted statements from just four GOP members of Congress, all in support of Trumps move. One of them, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), said its important to deny refugees entry to help prevent jihadists from infiltrating the United States.
Its worth noting that the U.S. refugee screening process is already very intensive. The likelihood of being killed by a refugee terrorist in the U.S. is 1 in 3.6 billion, per a new Cato Institute report.

Nice comparison between statements of Republicans and Democrats. What makes the Republican comments even more cowardly is that many of them rejected Trump's proposal for a Muslim ban during the Republican primaries, so this is not even a standard issue where Democrats and Republicans would differ. Instead, they are embracing their racist base.

(115,869 posts)and many of them ended up dead in Nazi concentration camps. This was a terrible moral stain the US has tried to live down - after World War II, the US started believing it had a moral obligation to help people fleeing persecution. It became something for Americans to be proud of. It became a value people saw in America itself. Do those GOPers want to revert back to those bad old days when they felt it was OK to turn away people facing persecution and possible death - for their own political advantage?

Meanwhile, the left is being united and strengthened from the grass roots up. Don't know what the two new parties will look like. Maybe Dems and Greens or something like that.
We may have to ride the wave downward for a little while, and some people will doubtless be hurt by the declining economic situation (everything he's doing is going to lose us jobs, not bring them). But history bends toward progress, no matter what, and there's nothing they can do to stop it.
