Trump vows insurance for everybody in Obamacare replacement plan

Source: Washington Post

President-elect Donald Trump said in a weekend interview that he is nearing completion of a plan to replace President Obama’s signature health-care law with the goal of “insurance for everybody,” while also vowing to force drug companies to negotiate directly with the government on prices in Medicare and Medicaid.

Trump declined to reveal specifics in the telephone interview late Saturday with The Washington Post, but any proposals from the incoming president would almost certainly dominate the Republican effort to overhaul federal health policy as he prepares to work with his party’s congressional majorities.

Trump’s plan is likely to face questions from the right, following years of GOP opposition to further expansion of government involvement in the health-care system, and from those on the left, who see his ideas as disruptive to changes brought by the Affordable Care Act that have extended coverage to tens of millions of Americans.

In addition to his replacement plan for the ACA, also known as Obamacare, Trump said he will target pharmaceutical companies over drug prices and demand that they negotiate directly with Medicaid and Medicare. “They’re politically protected, but not anymore,” he said of pharmaceutical companies.

It could be restricted, shitty, bare-bones health care, but it would still be a brilliant move on their part.

Then they'd take advantage of the approval and the distraction to quietly proceed with dismantling every other environmental and social program, while establishing permanent corporate dominance and ramping up our foreign misadventures.

Especially when bidding for international contracts, which with globalization is more and more of a reality. The reason is that US companies as it stands have a disadvantage because they must include the cost of medical insurance they provide for their workers. Every other western democracy has some form of single payer which means that the population pays for it. I can see why Trump would be in favour of it.

It would be a coup if Trump used the bully pulpit to convince his anti-government-programs deplorables to embrace mandatory single payer medical insurance. Pull the wool right out from under the 'no we can't" DLC/DNC position.

EMTALA required ERs to treat anyone regardless of payment ability, while the hospital has to recuperate the costs by overcharging everyone for everything else. Because people would die in the waiting room after being denied treatment.

We had to wait until Clinton took office before we got funding for small rural ERs to keep them open.

If Trump and the GOP pass any kind of ACA replacement, we will likely still have to wait for a Democratic president and congress before we can get enough funding for it to do any good.

36. It will be based on his HHS and Ryan's proposals. It is privatization, and it will be bad
Mon Jan 16, 2017, 01:09 AM
Jan 2017

Here are five key planks in his own health care proposal:

1.Price's plan offers fixed tax credits so people can buy their own insurance on the private market. The credit starts at $1,200 a year and rises with age, but isn't adjusted for income. Everyone receives the same credit whether they are rich or poor. People on Medicaid, Medicare, the military health plan known as Tricare, or the Veterans Affairs' health plan could opt instead for the tax credit to buy private insurance.
2.Price advocates for expansion of health savings accounts, which allow people to save money before taxes to pay for health care. This includes allowing people who are covered by government health programs including Medicare and the VA to contribute to health savings accounts to pay for premiums and copayments. These proposals are included in Ryan's plan.
3.People with existing medical conditions couldn't be denied coverage under Price's plan as long as they had continuous insurance for 18 months prior to selecting a new policy. If they didn't, then they could be denied coverage for that condition for up to 18 months after buying a new plan.
4.The Price proposal limits the amount of money companies can deduct from their taxes for employee health insurance expenses. Companies can deduct up to $20,000 for a family health insurance plan and $8,000 for an individual. The goal is to discourage companies from offering overly generous insurance benefits to their workers. Ryan's plan proposes a cap on the employer tax deduction but doesn't specify the level of the cap.
5.States would get federal money to create so-called high-risk pools under Price's plan. These are government-run health plans for people with existing medical conditions who can't get affordable health insurance on the private market. Critics say high-risk pools have been tried in as many as 34 states and largely failed because they were routinely underfunded.

http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/11/29/503720671/5-things-to-know-about-rep-tom-prices-health-care-ideas

Only it won't just apply to the ACA, Medicare and Medicaid will be right on that same chopping block.

I really hope something very bad happens to these assholes

but it turned out to be a big joke, where the premiums cost more than any possible benefits. No major medical, no brand name prescription drug coverage, you'd be better off bargaining with doctors and hospitals and pharmacies.

I think Trump and the R's are going to find out how difficult it is to craft a replacement for the ACA that doesn't involve hurting millions of people. Or maybe they just don't care?

One bright spot is Trump's statement that he wants Medicare and Medicaid to negotiate prices directly with drug companies. This is something the Dems couldn't achieve with the ACA, too much push back from Big Pharma. I doubt however that the GOP will support that either.

I don't have my hopes up for any of this.

70. The job of underwriting a successful for profit health ins policy is that it cost more than it cover

Which is what the majority of Republicans support, and is the reason they wanted to repeal the ACA in the first place. It had some provisions in place which created a barrier between underwriting a policy, and having maximum profits. Pre existing conditions coverage, yearly and lifetime caps are examples of such.

Knowing this, I see nothing useful coming from the Republicans. They'll apply lipstick to what they propose, but it's still not going to be something honestly better, or even as good as the ACA.

At best, people will lose key aspects of their coverage, or their entire ability to have coverage at all at worst.

the Brits have better overall health outcomes by a 2 to 1 margin in comparable demographics.

Can one say, Universal Health Care?

Sure one can.

legislation is required to make laws and "make health care great" on a sheet of paper isn't legislation.

I don't expect Traitor Trump to able to establish universal healthcare. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. So I have the expectation that this is just so much hyperbolic bullshit from Traitor Trump. He's a pathological liar and changes his mind every 2 minutes.

However, these promises of “insurance for everybody" are bound to set-up his rural red-neck supporters with their own set of expectations. Will be interesting to see what the "deal" is with Ryan, if any. I think that Republicans are getting very very nervous.

Go check you representatives FB page and see what comments his constituents are leaving. My representative's (Hensarling R TX-5) FB pages are chock full of "don't take away my ACA" comments. As a Buddhist, I believe in the truth of karma. All actions bear results. As more and more people suffer for lack of affordable healthcare and medication, as more and more healthcare workers lose their jobs, as insurance rates go up to pick up the slack-dirth of insurees, all that too will bear fruit.

81. Honestly I think this shows what a simple mind Trump has.

He really doesn't grasp the complexity of the problems which are laid on the President's feet. Clearly he wasn't paying any attention when Obama was trying to negotiate between the insurance industry, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, doctors organizations, patient advocacy groups and other players in this scenario. Its the most complicated domestic issue. And he thinks you can replace it overnight with something better, without discussing it with any of these players. What a simpleton.

And if he thinks health care is a simple problem, just imagine how much he doesn't know about every aspect of foreign policy.
