11 US states saw strong hiring last month, 5 lost jobs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Eleven U.S. states reported healthy job gains in October, and the unemployment rate fell in seven, as hiring improved modestly nationwide. Thirty-four states reported little change.

The Labor Department says the biggest percentage jobs gains were in Montana, Louisiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, where hiring rose about 0.5 percent. California added the most with 31,200, followed by Michigan with 18,900.

The economy picked up in the fall even amid the contentious presidential election. Americans ramped up their shopping and applications for unemployment aid fell to a four-decade low, a sign layoffs are scarce.

That's prompted steady hiring, though it has fallen from last year's pace. Employers added 161,000 jobs nationwide in October, enough to reduce the unemployment rate over time. The rate slipped to 4.9 percent from 5 percent in September.

I refuse to believe we've been so spectacularly unsuccessful after 70 years of accepted social change.

They voted for Mr. Trump over our candidate for other reasons, and the people who don't accept this are denying reality to suit their own agenda.

We will never win another national election if we focus on voters in California, New York, Illinois and a few other northeastern states.

I'd have much rather pulled out of a few trade agreements and possibly had talks about building a wall, and have Hillary as President than have the buffoon in chief we have now.

You get put on the rural areas and racism runs rampant. Otherwise not so much in the cities.

I don't know to what extent voting was suppressed in Detroit and Flint, but more turnout in either area could have swung it. However, it's still not final there. Wisconsin is just as bad, so quit picking on Michigan, which is also, by the way, heavily gerrymandered.

50% MOL of eligeble voters voted. we need to motivate the liberal and progressive share of them to the poll and vote. Not suck up to the Bigots and Hate Mongers.

Michigan probably did, too, but they actually haven't turned in their final numbers - still too close to call.
