FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona police officer captured on video punching a woman in the face during her arrest has been placed on administrative leave while the Flagstaff police department investigates the officer's actions, the department said Thursday.

Police Chief Kevin Treadway said his department is conducting an internal affairs investigation and asking the Northern Arizona University Police Department to conduct a criminal investigation.

"We are taking this very, very seriously," he told reporters.

Treadway said the officer reported that Marissa Morris kicked him and kneed him in the groin before he hit her. She was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

Flagstaff police chief vows transparency day after video shows officer punching woman

Yihyun Jeong , The Republic | azcentral.com 3:07 p.m. MST November 17, 2016

The video shows a woman on a sidewalk resisting arrest as a Flagstaff police officer suddenly strikes her in the face with his fist.

Within hours of the encounter being captured by a witness Wednesday and posted to social media, Officer Jeff Bonar was placed on administrative leave and an internal review was launched.

"I am concerned with what is depicted in the video, as I know many are," Flagstaff Police Chief Kevin Treadway said in a press conference Thursday. "I have heard your concerns, and this department is taking this incident very seriously."

Bonar, 28, was brought into the police station Wednesday after the department became aware of the video at about 7:30 p.m., Treadway said. The officer then "was removed of his police powers" and placed on administrative leave until the conclusion of an internal-affairs investigation.

I read the police blotter when I lived there you'd get Flagtaff High broken into, computer lab equipment stolen or Flagstaff teen arrested for marijuana at Flagstaff mall.

High rates of drug but not much else, most years they have 0 murders.

Must be a bored cop.

On edit: though the same bank at the Flagstaff mall which is right off the interstate was robbed 2 or 3 times in 2001.
