IRVINE, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect who was shot by a California Highway Patrol officer on the 5 Freeway in Irvine has died, authorities said.
The shooting caused a massive traffic jam on the freeway.
The CHP said the shooting happened on the 5 near Highway 133 at about 6:55 p.m.
Officials said they responded to a call for a pedestrian running in lanes on the northbound 5 near Barranca Parkway. The pedestrian was later seen on the southbound side, where a motorist hit him.
When officers arrived at the scene, the man was still on his feet in traffic lanes. A confrontation ensued with the officers and he was shot.
