Switzerland Salez attack: Knifeman sets fire to Swiss train

Source: BBC

A knifeman has set fire to a train in north-eastern Switzerland, leaving six people in hospital with stab wounds and burns, police say.

The suspected attacker, described as a Swiss man aged 27, was also taken to hospital after the incident near Salez in St Gallen Canton.

He had ignited a flammable liquid before attacking people with a knife.

Among the injured is a child of six. There was no immediate information as to motive or background. Three rescue helicopters are at the scene. A major police operation is under way.

Not cool, guys...

If not here then it's somewhere in Europe, if not there, then it's probably some school in China.

Just a constant stream of sick people with whatever motivations trying to harm innocent people.

everywhere unfortunately. The Swiss train system is one of the safest in the world and the people - including the ticket takers, etc. - are very friendly for the most part.

I am so sorry to hear this. My heart goes out to those who were harmed and their families - with the exception of the instigator alone. I sincerely hope that his burns are the most serious and that he feels every bit of pain to the fullest.

Full disclosure: I spent about five hours on Swiss trains, buses and shuttles today with no problem. I was in southwestern Switzerland, thank heavens, in the Valais. My experience is the rule. This terrible incident is definitely the exception.

"ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack and later released footage of the 17-year-old axeman, named as Muhammad Riyad, being gunned down by armed police after fleeing the scene."

His victims are going to get patched up and go home. The damage to the train will be repaired. He death was absolutely meaningless.
As it should be.

The psychological damage to the victims and public cannot be overlooked.

Other than that I agree with you. I'm happy that no one was killed.

That is where I got the information from. Unlike this particular article, which refuses to give any detail about the perpetrator's race and religion.

"He's Muslim"

No, that has not been released.

"ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack"

No, they haven't.

" later released footage of the 17-year-old"

No, they didn't, and he's 27, not 17.

"axeman"

No, he used a knife. That's in the OP.

"named as Muhammad Riyad"

No, he hasn't been named.

"being gunned down by armed police"

No, no report says he was shot.

"after fleeing the scene"

No, no report says he fled the scene. He's in hospital. We actually have:

"The alleged attacker, a 27-year-old Swiss citizen, was also injured when the train was set alight" http://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/switzerland-salez-train-attack-passengers-hurt-after-man-launches-an-attack-with-fire-and-a-knife-a3319446.html

So, you are hopelessly, utterly wrong on every detail you thought you knew. This is because you can't tell the difference between Germany and Switzerland. Or this month and last month.

Would you like some lessons in geography? Or telling the time?

They have a chance to see if there are OTHER people involved. If this WAS an organized terror attack, the police want to capture all the CO-CONSPIRATORS if there are any. The last thing the authorities are going to release is name, possible motive and that they are looking into his background and connections. You don't give a terrorist cell an advanced warning you are on to them.

Authorities did not yet know the motive for the attacks but a crime of passion was one possibility, Bruno Metzger of the St Gallen cantonal police said in an interview with welt.de.

"A terrorism background still seems very, very far-fetched," Metzger said.

A 34-year-old woman who was injured in an attack by a knifeman on a Swiss train has died in hospital, police say.

The attacker, a 27-year-old Swiss man, also died on Sunday, they said.

Five other people were hurt when the man set fire to the train and stabbed passengers in the attack on Saturday. Two of them, including a six-year-old child, are in a serious condition.

Police have said that, as yet, there is no indication of a political or terrorist motive for the attack.
