Syrian Government Kills At Least Four in Gas Attack In Aleppo

Source: Reuters / The Media Line

Hospital officials in Aleppo told the Reuters News Agency that four people, including women and children, were killed and another 55 suffered from breathing difficulties from poison gas, apparently chlorine.

The hospital officials and other residents of Aleppo said that Syrian government troops dropped the chlorine gas alongside barrel bombs on a neighborhood in war-torn Aleppo.

The manager of the Al Quds hospital in Aleppo said he was preserving pieces of patients clothing and fragments form the barrel bombs as evidence for future analysis.

The Syrian government attack came hours after Aleppo residents danced in the streets after Russia, which has conducting air strikes along with Syrian troops, said it would observe a three-hour daily ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to reach the 300,000 residents of Aleppo who have been under siege.

The Russian military meanwhile says Syrian militants have used a toxic agent against civilians in Aleppo, killing seven and sickening another 23 people.

The head of Russian military’s Reconciliation Center at the Hemeimeem air base in Syria, Lt. Gen. Sergei Chvarkov, said Wednesday that the rebels struck a residential area in eastern Aleppo with a toxic agent. Chvarkov didn’t identify the substance used in Tuesday’s attack, but said the victims suffocated or suffered lung burns.

Chvarkov said the attack was launched by Nour el-Deine Zengi, a militant group he said has been considered by the U.S. as part of moderate opposition. He said the Russian military had informed the U.S. about the incident.

Nour el-Deine Zengi didn’t immediately issue a response to the allegations.

This cycle of retaliatory violence, up to and including gas attacks, will only end if their is a negotiated peace in the Syrian civil war.
