New Black Panther Party says to carry arms in Cleveland if legal
Source: Reuters
The New Black Panther Party, a "black power" movement, will carry firearms for self-defense during demonstrations in Cleveland ahead of next week's Republican convention if allowed under Ohio law, the group's chairman said.
The plan by the group could add to security headaches for the Ohio city after last week's killing of five police officers in Dallas by a U.S. army veteran who had been drawn to black separatist ideology, including on Facebook, before hatching his plan to target white police officers.
Several other groups, including some supporters of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, have said they will carry weapons in Cleveland, leading to concerns about rival groups being armed in close proximity.
"If it is an open state to carry, we will exercise our second amendment rights because there are other groups threatening to be there that are threatening to do harm to us," Hashim Nzinga, chairman of the New Black Panther Party, told Reuters in an interview.

(13,889 posts)I'm always perplexed as to why people censor their own naughty words, like divine beings wouldn't be able to tell. Reminds me of the time the local Jewish community proposed setting up an Eruv, which is a way for Jewish people to have more fun on the Sabbath by hanging a piece of red thread from street lamps etc. to redefine the whole neighborhood as the boundary of a domestic home...I always wonder why people would worship a being that is so easily fooled.

(19,264 posts)It varies by state but in most states it is just like conceal carry except not concealed.
There are a few state (notably CA) which allows open carry but only unloaded but they are relatively rare.

(54,256 posts)You'd be better off (more 'protected') carrying a club than an unloaded weapon.
P.S. I'm not in favor of ANY kind of carry, open or concealed.

(13,889 posts)I hate guns but I don't feel that the mere sight of one is an incitement to violence. There's a specific definition in law for 'brandishment' which is where you're waving a weapon about or displaying it in a manner that could reasonably be interpreted as intimidating. Simply carrying is not the same thing and I don't feel threatened by someone doing so.
If you think it's an incitement to violence I suggest you work on your self-control because you're seriously outta step with other people.

(1,254 posts)Why that would get in the way, spoil the fun! Seeing an armed black man for some of these skin heads, KKK, and right wing militia's descending on Cleveland is like waving a red cape before angered bulls! These guns nuts have no use for common sense. Some are HELL-BENT on using their weapons and they aren't going to Cleveland to party.

(19,264 posts)Why make a statement that you will do something if it is legal? Why not research and then either say "we will do this thing because it is legal" or "we will not do this thing because it is not legal but the law should be changed blah blah blah"? I just figured an organization would figure out if it is legal or not and THEN announce their plans.
BTW it is legal (w/ some minor restrictions if you don't have a conceal carry permit)

(5,902 posts)They of all people should know that there are few more glaring double standards in many parts of this country than the one that applies to guns.
If they, as black people, show up outside the GOP convention packing heat - let's just say they'd be in God's hands.

(1,254 posts)They are going to be CONFRONTED by skin heads, KKK and right wing (patriotic?) militias. Armed or not, the sight of black skin will trigger (yes) a response from these kooks. They are coming to Cleveland for one over-riding purpose...looking for an opportunity and excuse to use their 2nd amendment remedies. People are angry and frustrated.....the the one's coming with weapons are coming to unload their frustrations. These people place a lot of blame on minorities and they think this is their ultimate chance to confront the people they think responsible for all their personal problems/failures.

(14,013 posts)...the 1967 Mulford Act was introduced that was intended to disarm people of color, especially Blacks.
In the 1960s and 70s, the rise of the Black Panther Party in California made white citizens uneasy. Why would a group of black people exercising their rights to bear arms make white people uneasy?
Ronald Reagan was governor of California doing the time of the passing of Mulford Act. He supported gun control because black people were realizing that they should have the freedom to bear arms, too...
