Gillum picked as Hillary Clinton delegate

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum will be on Team Hillary when Democrats meet this summer to pick their presidential nominee.
Gillum was selected during a party gathering Saturday in Orlando as one of Hillary Clinton's delegates to the Democratic National Convention, set for July 25-28 in Philadelphia.
The former secretary of state got nearly two-thirds of the vote and a corresponding chunk of delegates when she scored a decisive victory over rival Bernie Sanders in Florida's March primary. The mayor campaigned for her in Tallahassee and elsewhere, including South Carolina, an important early primary state.
"It is a real honor to be selected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for Secretary Clinton," Gillum said. "I am looking forward to enthusiastically casting a vote for the candidate that is the most qualified to be president and the one who has a concrete plan to continue the progress of President Obama's administration."
Clinton has 1,768 pledged delegates and another 525 superdelegates, putting her 90 shy of the 2,383 she needs to clinch the nomination. Gillum said he's confident she'll ultimately prevail.......................
Clinton delegates elected from the Tallahassee area include Judy Mount, chair of the Jackson County Democratic Executive Committee, and Dave Jacobsen, president of the Democratic Club of North Florida. Sanders delegates are Nikki Barnes, chair of the Wakulla County DEC, and Danny Pooler of Leon County.

Virgin Islands Superdelegate Drops Bernie Sanders For Hillary Clinton
Nash Riggins
..............Former Senator Emmett Hansen II said he decided to drop Sanders after a weekend briefing on Hillary Clintons policy agenda for U.S. territories, arguing that Clintons plans for the Virgin Islands were more ambitious.
...........................
Although the two-time senator and former head of the Democratic Party of the Virgin Islands had been regularly communicating with the Sanders campaign, Hansen said that he had grown frustrated with the long-time independents flimsy territorial agenda.
Hansen told Bloomberg on Tuesday that he had repeatedly pressed Sanders aides to take detailed positions on issues that mattered to Democratic voters in the Virgin Islands to no avail.
.....................
But on Saturday, the St. Croix-native met with Karen Green, a volunteer outreach lead who works with the Clinton campaign across the Caribbean community. After being shown the Democratic front-runners territorial policies in black-and-white, Hansen said he agreed that Clintons agenda provided clear goals for the chain of islands he represents.
...................................
As part of her overlying strategy to overhaul the rights of territorial residents, Clinton has pledged to extend the Affordable Care Act across all American territories and ensure that residents are provided the same Medicare and Medicaid benefits that are currently available on the mainland. Shes also vowed to give islands like the Virgin Islands a real vote in presidential elections.
The Virgin Islands will host the Democratic Partys next presidential contest on June 4. The group of islands lays claim to 12 convention delegates, seven of which are awarded based on votes. .....................................
