FacebookTweetMeghan McCain has officially gone green as in, marijuana green.
During an appearance on Tuesday's Tonight Show with Jay Leno, McCain discussed her new book, America, You Sexy Bitch, which includes a section about her advocating for the legalization of pot.
"I was living in Los Angeles very briefly last year, and I was shocked at how people here smoke weed the way people in New York pour wine," she said. "Once I started doing research onto the economic benefits for our country by decriminalizing marijuana, I decided to come out publicly in support of it."

Right on. Now if everyone that tokes takes the same stance we will be able to change the stupid laws.

(390 posts)no one with a lick of sense left right or center still supports throwing
people in jail over mere possession of a few grams of weed.
The only people who still support that bullshit are 50-60-70
year old hypocrite who think nothing of passing out every night
after having 3-5 beers.

(5,235 posts)It is a very big money maker for a niche group of people and they are mad that their cash cow is in danger.
It's an industry of it's own and they won't let go easily. Follow the process after someone gets busted and see who makes the money along the way.

(5,106 posts)And I'm puzzled about the opposition to legalization. Some 40 years ago, knowing how many people, including myself, indulged, I was positive it would be legal by now.

(5,106 posts)I'm a Democrat, but feel that Ms. McCain is offering Republicans a way back to the light for the kind of Republicans I used to know and considered friends. Sure, she has a forum due to who her father is, but she makes very good use of it. Most of all, she makes sense.

(552 posts)Sure we disagree with her most of the time, but this a Republican who would be for the decriminalization of small drug users, she is for gay marriage, she is for pay equity, she knows climate change exists and wants to do something about it, and sides with the Dems on some other issues too. If she agreed with us all the time she would be a Dem. She is not. At least Republicans like her would not be like the Tea Party. I have no ill will towards her. I disagree with her a lot of the time, but I can respect her. What she is doing is not easy in her party.

Decriminalize marijuana? Four ways America's views of pot are changing
Another poll by Angus Reid also suggested that Americans broadly agreed that marijuana crimes should be punished less harshly than some others. Three of four Americans favor the use of fines or probation in lieu of criminal sanctions for marijuana offenders, according to the May poll.
In addition, 74 percent of respondents said they favored the imposition of "alternative penalties," such as fines, probation, or community service, rather than prison for violators of marijuana possession laws. By contrast, only 41 percent of respondents favored such penalties for credit-card fraud, and only one-third for drunk driving offenders ...
