Flint could sue state over contaminated water

LANSING The City of Flint has accused the State of Michigan of "grossly negligent oversight" and notified officials it may sue over the lead contamination of the city's drinking water, in a move that took state officials by surprise.
A spokesman for Gov. Rick Snyder said Flint's filing of a notice of intent to sue the state could complicate efforts to fix problems in Flint, and House Speaker Kevin Cotter, R-Mt. Pleasant, said "a reckless lawsuit could throw the state budget into disarray and undermine everything weve done for the city."
Mayor Karen Weaver issued a statement Friday saying she has "no intention at this point of having the City of Flint sue the state," but the March 24 filing was needed for technical reasons to protect the city's right to potentially sue in future. "I have every intention of continuing my efforts to work with Gov. Rick Snyder and other state officials to seek resolution in all aspects of the Flint water crisis," Weaver said.
Flint City Attorney Stacy Erwin Oakes said under the law, the city has only 180 days from the time it becomes aware of a potential claim against the state to file such a notice, or it loses its right to sue. That clock was running out when the notice was filed, she said.
