A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch on Sunday and cause to dislodge a part of cliff in Taylor's Mistake bay
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand on Sunday with so brutal force that it caused to collapse a part of cliff into sea near Christchurch.
The earthquake was centered about 17 kilometers off east coast of Christchurch and felt around in many areas across the country. The quake hit around 1pm local time and lasted 30 seconds. The quake occurred just few days before the anniversary of a deadly one that led to widespread damage across Christchurch in 2011 and took the lives of 185 people.
The quake was one of the largest since 2011 and strong shocks were felt by thousands of people in the city. It also ripped off a cliff near Taylor's Mistake bay and a massive cloud of dust could also be seen after the collapse. No injuries or death have been reported to date.

(20,577 posts)the pooh bahs where I live had the wisdom to place our only hospital on a cliff. Now they want to put a convention center there too. We are on the Juan de Fuca Plate.

(60,010 posts)the owner wanted me to buy it.
I bought a house a mile inland instead, and this was long before the cliff collapses on Whidbey a couple years ago.
great views from the bluff, but given all the rain......
Throw in your earthquake potential, and not enough insurance...yikes

(20,577 posts)Sequim. Our Bluffs are eroding and we had an expert from Whidbey come over and explain things to us. It is more like what not to do - that which hastens the crumbling - because other than that - not much anyone can do. It is crazy but in some areas houses have been vacated with caution tape all around and yet people are still buying the bluff property?!?!

(1,717 posts)They still have an amazing sense of social justice.
I mean really amazing.
They make sailing, golf, even big game fishing accessible to all . .
Not to mention health care . .
They get all bent out of shape if any school kid lacks full access to all the best supplies.
