Anger has been simmering for months about the shooting of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager, by a white Chicago police officer. Will it erupt when video showing McDonald's death goes public?
Chicago will soon find out.
A judge in the northern Illinois city has given the city until Wednesday to release police dashcam video that shows the October 20, 2014, shooting. It's a move Chicago officials have resisted, claiming it could jeopardize any ongoing investigation.

Too bad they're only scratching the surface. 1 corrupt cop gets charged, 1000 get away with it.

(113,303 posts)just found "not guilty" a couple of weeks ago.
of course, the fact that he was charged at all is absolutely amazing.
It was a video, not our justice system, that got the case even THIS far.

At the news conference, Alvarez said that she had made her decision to charge Van Dyke internally weeks before the judge ordered the video released to the public. Witness interviews had been done over the past year, and up until a week ago they were still interviewing people, she said.
It wasnt going to be much longer, it really wasnt. Alvarez said. I would say within a month.
Alvarez said she has never seen anything like the videotaped shooting in her three decades in law enforcement.
Alvarez called the video graphic, violent and chilling and said that it no doubt will tear at the hearts of all Chicagoans.

The cop sits in jail, charged with 1st degree murder...and hopefully that will keep violence down in Chicago.. This video may be one of the worst ever seen on this subject. We will see tomorrow.

(3,194 posts)Because you see, Pigs are very special, so unlike an everyday criminal, we have to give them EVERY benefit of the doubt. You can't just look at the video and see a criminal act. It takes 100's, perhaps 1,000's of viewings before you can even think of coming to that conclusion. Cause ya know, pigs are our friends. They're all good guys with guns, and if him and his buddies all say he is innocent, they're usually telling the truth.
This Bastard has been drawing a salary for the past year, when he should have been arrested 11 months ago.
She spent the whole press conference defending her LATE decision, and how it had little to do with the video release tomorrow. They were going to charge him within the next few days.....or weeks.....or months......or whenever.
I especially love how she blamed the Feds for her delaying any charges, because after all, they're her bosses, not the citizens of the community in Chicago where this crime happened. When in doubt, and trying to cover up for your own screw ups, just blame someone else, that usually works.

CHICAGO (AP) The latest on the shooting of a black teenager by a white Chicago police officer. (All times local):
5 p.m.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy urged calm as they prepared to release a video of a white officer fatally shooting a black teenager.
The officials spent the first several minutes of a news conference early Tuesday evening to ask residents to be peaceful in their protests and to lay out plans for policing the city should demonstrations escalate.
A judge last week ordered the release of the video of the October 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald. Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the shooting.

(3,194 posts)Well, I guess it's a little late for that. Perhaps if you had actually charged this piggie 11 months ago, there wouldn't have been this outrage.
They're going to wait until the last possible day, and try to sneak it in right before everyone shuts down for the holiday on Thursday. The news cycle will go cold late Wednesday, so they hope to minimize the exposure this gets since everyone will be busy cooking and getting ready to be consumers on Friday.
I hope they protest and shut down Michigan avenue, the main downtown street with lots of stores and businesses who are counting on a successful Black Friday.
The people truly responsible for this joke will not pay, but maybe this will impact the city's business infrastructure enough that some people in positions of authority get blamed for a lack of sales and tax revenue this weekend.

(3,660 posts)This is one step in the right direction, but a lot more work needs to be done. Once again this case will be in the hands of a jury and whether they at the end of the day will have the courage to convict a police officer with first degree murder still remains to be seen. But again this is a good first step.
