Putin on terrorism: 'To forgive them is up to God, but to send them to him is up to me' (UPDATED)

Source: The Straits Times (Singapore)

Known for his hardline stance and strong public remarks, Russian President Vladimir Putin's latest quotable quote has been making the rounds on social media.

A tweet by Ms Remi Maalouf, a news anchor with television channel Russia Today, highlights Mr Putin's colourful take on terrorism: "To forgive them is up to God, but to send them to him is up to me."

In the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks on Nov 13 which killed at least 129 people, Russia and France agreed to coordinate their military and security services against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants in Syria.

Mr Putin, speaking to his top military officials, had vowed merciless retaliation for the attacks, as warplanes from both countries unleashed bombs on the ISIS stronghold of Raqa earlier this week.

"It's necessary to establish direct contact with the French and work with them as allies," he said.

Turns out the Russia Today news anchor used a fake quote and Faux followed suit...

American broadcaster Fox News has fallen foul of a fake quote doing the rounds on social media today.

The TV channel mistakenly attributed a line from the film ‘Man on Fire’, spoken by actor Denzel Washington, to Vladimir Putin in the furore over Islamic State.

A Fox journalist wrongly claimed that Putin had said of IS militants: "To forgive the terrorists is up to God but to send them to him is up to me."

In bitter unintended irony, the reporter wrote of the falsely attributed statement: "I love these quotes from him. They’re both awesome and hysterical. He’s a world leader who is really a movie character..."

She credited a Russia Today news anchor, Remi Maalouf, as the source of the information.

Often credited with the paraphrased, "Kill 'em all. Let God sort it out."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnaud_Amalric
Arnaud Amaury or Arnaud Amalric (died 1225) was a Cistercian abbot who took a prominent role in the Albigensian Crusade. He is most remembered for allegedly advising a soldier, who was worrying about killing orthodox Catholics along with the heretics during the sack of the Cathar stronghold of Béziers, Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius. ("Kill them. For the Lord knows those that are His own.&quot

who they helped create. They only are trying to keep them in check, as they fight against Assad, with the hopes of destroying the Iran, Iraq, Hezbollah axis.
The Russians on the other hand, are trying to destroy ISIS, along with other terrorist groups.
Unfortunately for France, they also reap what they have sown, and they have been part of the sowing.

10. Very Russian approach to war
Wed Nov 18, 2015, 11:29 AM
Nov 2015

They've always had this tendency, but WWII (which was WAY worse for the Russians than anyone) really made an indelible mark on the Russian soul and Putin grew up in a still-rubble-strewn country, so he is close to the apex of that mindset.

It will be all-out war --- "make the rubble bounce" I believe was the Soviet answer to the question of whether to continue bombardment of a German town that was resisting. They just get to a point and then act like a pissed-off bear that is their symbol.

They've had their own problems with radical Muslims in Chechnya, and they used this approach there.

Sad thing is, all-out war works, in its own twisted way.

Developer of the Strategic Air Command, Gen. Curtis LeMay, provided many enjoyable (if not apocryphal) quotes, such as at a Senate hearing when asked why, with already enough nuclear bombs to reduce the Soviet Union to cinders, he still wanted more nuclear weapons, LeMay replied, “I want to see the cinders dance.”

There's a Russian legend of a werewolf who was a nobleman named Igor Malikov. He and his shape-shifting servants terrorized the district where he lived until he was finally hunted down in human form and killed by a group of Cossacks.

Malikov begged for mercy. The captain of the Cossacks replied as he drew his pistol and cocked it: "Mercy? You can expect mercy from The Almighty. All you can expect from me is justice."

..During the Russian Civil War, Don and Kuban Cossacks were the first nations to declare open war against the Bolsheviks. By 1918, Cossacks declared the complete independence of their nations and formed the independent states, the Ukrainian State, the Don Republic, and the Kuban People's Republic. The Cossack troops formed the effective core of the anti-Bolshevik White Army, and Cossack republics became centers for the Anti-Bolshevik White movement. With the victory of the Red Army, the Cossack lands were subjected to Decossackization and the man-made famine of 1932–33 (Holodomor). After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Cossacks made a systematic return to Russia. Many took an active part in Post-Soviet conflicts and Yugoslav Wars. In Russia's 2010 Population Census, Cossacks have been recognized as an ethnicity.[18] There are Cossack organizations in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Poland, and the United States.[19][20][21]...
