Hundreds of thousands of Texas women attempted self-induced abortion – study
Source: The Guardian
Between 100,000 and 240,000 women in Texas aged 18 to 49 have tried to induce an abortion at home, according to a new study released on Tuesday.
In the first study of its kind, the Texas Policy Evaluation Project (TxPEP), run by the University of Texas, attempted to show the prevalence of self-induced abortions in the state in the wake of legislators attempts to limit womens access to abortions. Last week the supreme court agreed to hear a challenge to one of Texass most stringent abortion laws, known as HB2, which has led to the closure of more than half the states clinics.
Presented alongside the TxPEP data were interviews with 18 women who had tried to end their pregnancies at home with varying degrees of success and differing medical consequences in the past five years. The women were interviewed between October 2014 and October 2015.
A 24-year-old from the lower Rio Grande valley used the abortion medication misoprostol to try to end her pregnancy.

(955 posts)this would be a pretty good reason for getting rid of these harmful laws and restrictions. In right wing religious world, it'll likely be reason to put any woman who has a miscarriage on trial.
edit: I lied. In a sane world, these laws wouldn't exist in the first place.

(2,674 posts)The worst impact on the closing of the Abortion Clinics is in the Rio Grand valley and further to the west, all the way out to El Paso. There are no clinics west and south of San Antonio, and that covers a huge area of Texas. In order to get a legal abortion, if you live in the Valley, you must travel hundreds of miles to find a clinic, then pay to stay in a motel because of the required waiting period. Poor working women (mostly Hispanic in this area) can't afford the cost, so they go to a flea market and buy some drug to induce the abortion. Who knows what they are taking. If they are lucky, they can cross over the border to Mexican and have it done. Also many go to Mexico and buy the abortion drugs there.
Just makes me sick to see what is happening and what these women are having to go through. The right to have an abortion is the law and there should be no obstacles to exercise this right.

(19,240 posts)Texas has been the pressure valve which has allowed nearby states like Miss to pander to R to L without actually angering women (too much). Now that Texas is trying to pander to R to L, this raises the awful specter that this will happen again:
a photo that changed a lot of minds about abortion.
The Right Wing---which, so far, has been able to pander to R to L without alienating too many women---knows that if abortion is absolutely impossible to obtain, women will die the way that Gerri Santorro died---and the backlash against the backlash will begin. Including pressure to replace the business friendly conservative (in)justices with women.

(19,926 posts)This is sickening.
The other thing that happens is you get 19 year olds who throw their infants out the window to their deaths when they hear their mother coming to their room because their pregnancy was hidden from her.
I heard that story on the radio a couple days ago.
EDIT: found that story and it happened in Chicago and wasn't because of lack of access to an abortion clinic, but there are many stories of women abandoning/neglecting/harming their unwanted babies that they were forced to carry to term.
