'Anonymous' Hackers Declare War on ISIS in Video Message

Source: NBC News

The hacker group Anonymous has apparently responded to the attacks on Paris by posting a video declaration of war against ISIS.

In the as-yet-unverified video, posted on YouTube, a spokesperson wearing the group's signature Guy Fawkes mask said the group of hackers would use its expertise to wage "war" on the militant group.

"Expect massive cyber attacks. War is declared. Get prepared," the announcer says in French.

"Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down. You should know that we will find you and we will not let you go. We will launch the biggest operation ever against you," the spokesperson continued, according to translated transcripts of the video.

I don't know if Anon has "thwarted one plot", and neither do you!
You're the one saying Anon is useless. I have to disagree.

And they don't mention here in Canada where they pressured the police to investigate the rape and subsequent suicide of teen Rehtaeh Parsons. Her own father credits Anonymous for it. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/rehtaeh-parsons-s-father-credits-anonymous-for-reopening-investigation-1.3177605

I gather you wanted an example of terrorist plot thwarts, but the fact that they have had other successes like this indicate they are not without teeth. I wish them luck.

Thwarting an actual terrorist plot is a huge ask. As we have seen, even a heightened awareness after the Charlie Hebdo murders, French police couldn't stop this one.

So do you give Anonymous any credit at all for those other successes? Do they have to actually take down a terrorist cell to prove their worth? It just sounds like snark to me.

If Anonymous ever says, "we're going to do something" and it's only one video saying it, take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah, just like giving weapons, ammunition & money to "moderate" terrorists
because they are "your friends" ... oops.

Mind you, there have been enough people here on DU who have absolved
both Obama & Clinton of the same crimes that Bush did so I'll not worry
about the "risk" of Anonymous going after "someone on the left" just yet.

It's not like they have a single entity releasing videos. It's not uncommon to see "declarations of war" by Anonymous and never hear anything about it again. They are able to do large scale attacks at times, but they also tend to declare war on everything in existence due to the nature of the group

If ISIS communicates and plots and plans via the "dark" web and the "dark" web was created by the United States government, why can't we "uncreate" it?

Since anyone can be in anonymous and make a video it's laughable people take it seriously.

Anonymous was born out of the influential internet messageboard 4chan, a forum popular with hackers and gamers, in 2003. The group's name is a tribute to 4chan's early days, when any posting to its forums where no name was given was ascribed to "Anonymous". But the ephemeral group, which picks up causes "whenever it feels like it", has now "gone beyond 4Chan into something bigger", its spokesman said.

The membership of Anonymous is impossible to pin down; it has been described as being like a flock of birds – the only way you can identify members is by what they're doing together. Essentially, once enough people on the 4chan message boards decide that an issue is worth pursuing in large enough numbers, it becomes an "Anonymous" cause.

I used to think for a long time that it was a brand more than anything else. But then I almost feel that that's an unfair description and probably the best description for me is movement because anyone can be part of it. It is a crowd of people, a nebulous crowd of people, working together and doing things together for various purposes. There's various imagery and etiquette and phrases that bind people together within this culture. So I suppose movement is the best way to describe it. There should be a new word that comes out like nebulous force or cyberforce or something. It's so difficult to use traditional language to describe such a new phenomenon that's born out of the world of the Internet. But movement is the closest thing. And process as well. It's almost like there's a system in place for how you can protest, for how you can disrupt, and Anonymous is not just an image or a brand but also a process people can use.

In a sense you and me, anyone is anonymous. So put on your guy fawkes mask and make a video
