ASSANGE STANDS 'REAL CHANCE' OF ELECTION IN AUSTRALIA AFP May 19, 2012, 4:04 pm SYDNEY (AFP) - Controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange stands a real chance of winning an upper house seat in his native Australia if he presses ahead with plans to stand for election, according to a poll. A survey conducted by the ruling Labor party's internal pollsters UMR Research and published in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper showed 25 percent of those polled would vote for the whistleblowing website chief. Supporters of the left-wing Greens party were most likely to be pro-Assange, with 39 percent saying they would vote for him, meaning he had a good chance of wresting a Greens Senate spot, UMR's John Utting told the newspaper. "There is clearly a significant level of support for Julian Assange which crosses party lines and is more concentrated amongst Greens voters," he said. 4. Chen Guangcheng dissident

So the blind Chen Guangcheng exposes lies and corruption in China and is a hero, Jullian exposes lies, corruption and murder in the west and is abused more than Chen Guangcheng has been abused by the Chinese.

5. In fact, Chen gets a pass to the U.S. (I support this) while Jullian would get

free airfare in handcuffs.
The difference is whose lies are being exposed. |

9. I'm thinking: If elected, no arrest as it'd be bad for relations with Australia...

HA! Sweet revenge!
That would be a joy, indeed! It's a joy just hearing of the poll. Voters with democratic ideals--committed to our common project as human beings--have a chance in a parliamentary system. We don't seem to have a chance here, except that we did, once, in the 1930s, elect a "New Deal" for ourselves. It may not be our constitutional system that is at fault, but, rather, massive undermining of our system, now by direct corporate control of the voting results, contrived with 'TRADE SECRET' code, owned and controlled largely (80%) by one, private, far rightwing-connected corporation--ES&S, which bought out Diebold. Yup, that might be the difference. |

10. Assange represents real democracy not the stage managed, manipulated choices that mask rule by a few
|
Wikileaks represents the democratization of information that makes it harder for the government and big business (or anyone for that matter) to lie to us, and therefore makes real, functioning democracy more likely.
A big part of our problem right now is that we have figured out how to do a lot of things with co-operative, horizontal structures online, but the governments and businesses that have the most impact on our life continue to be fiercely top down, for the benefit of the few, and are even becoming more so as they realize society is going to figure out how to run without them shortly. |
