Texas AG asks Supreme Court to uphold state’s abortion restrictions

Source: Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN–Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asked the Supreme Court Monday to uphold a 2013 law that has already caused half of the state’s abortion clinics to shutter.

The law requires doctors performing abortions to maintain admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and requires abortion facilities to meet costly hospital-like structural and operating standards.

Abortion providers challenged the provisions, claiming the law was meant to shutter clinics and did little to protect women’s health. The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld both provisions, prompting providers to request a review by the Supreme Court.

The High Court temporarily blocked the facilities requirements while it considers whether or not to take up the case. Paxton asked the Supreme Court to refuse the case and allow the restrictions to go into effect in full.

The governor is Republican. What can one conclude but that Texas women are completely on board with this?

While knowing exactly what to expect. Why? The same is true in a lot of other states, too. I don't get this. Why would women vote to restrict their own rights?
