The administration of Gov. Bruce Rauner has postponed the layoffs of about 150 unionized state workers scheduled to take place at the end of the month.

The delay includes unionized employees at the Illinois State Museum, which is slated to close to the public at the end of the month.

The Rauner administration said Tuesday it had no comment on what will happen with the State Museum now that the union layoffs have been postponed.

Both the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the Police Benevolent and Protective Association said they were notified by the governor's office that layoffs affecting their members had been delayed.

The 138-year-old museum could be the next casualty in an ugly state budget battle that has dragged on for months. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is targeting the museum and four satellite sites for closure, the latest in a series of cuts the former businessman says are needed to manage Illinoisí finances as he battles with Democrats who run the Legislature.
