Porn block in India: hundreds of sexual websites banned, internet outraged

Source: The Independent

India appears to have banned porn, ordering internet companies to turn off access to adult websites, dating pages and pornographic blogs.

Internet users trying to access the pages over the weekend have found that they are unavailable, apparently following a request from the Indian government.

The bans also include adult dating sites and porn blogs, according to reports from people in India. A list of the banned sites includes Adult Friend Finder — a hugely-popular site to let people find sexual partners — and Fleshbot, a porn blog that writes about news as well as showing highly-explicit photos.

The ban includes 857 sites, according to local reports that cited telecoms companies. The full list has been posted online by the Centre for Internet & Society, in a document that many have pointed out is a hugely comprehensive list of many of the most popular porn sites.

It needs an open discussion about sexuality and gender, not repression, ignorance and misogyny

By the way, a ton of American sites did not make the cut so maybe they will find some porn after all.

I've read a few LONG discussions about porn on this site, but I don't think I've seen anyone call for the outright ban of porn. I've seen people (whom I disagree with) talk about its evils and how it should be discouraged, but I don't recall reading anyone say it should be banned.

There were extensive discussions to be sure, and there were several that made it clear it should be banned outright because of it essentially being all about slave trade essentially.

in so many forums that a lot of things can get lost along the way. No biggie. It's not like it was the prevalent view, but there was a strong vein of it that felt insidious.

I bet VPN and proxy sales will skyrocket now.

Those who previously had no interest in porn will now seek it out and India will have more porn viewers than ever before.

This same thing happened with stupid Gandhi's prohibition and stupid Nehru's bans on imported goods -- both habits became more popular and gave rise to organized crime and corruption.

We don't see it, because it doesn't generally affect US interests. You might start by googling such terms as "hindu violence terrorism" and begin reading. It can be argued that India has more Hindu extremists than Muslim extremists, and they've absolutely been implicated in civilian targeted terrorism.
