U.S. Marine found guilty at retrial in 2006 murder of Iraqi civilian

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - A U.S. Marine was found guilty on Wednesday of murder in the 2006 slaying of a disabled Iraqi civilian, a killing that prosecutors said was motivated by a desire to send a message to a resistant Iraqi village, a Marine Corps official said.

Sergeant Lawrence Hutchins III was initially convicted of murder, larceny and making false statements over the killing of the civilian. His conviction was later overturned. The official, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said Hutchins was convicted again on Wednesday on three out of four counts, including murder.

Prosecutors have said Hutchins led a squad of Marines who planned a mission aimed at stopping militants' use of improvised bombs in the Iraqi village of Hamdania in the early morning hours of April 26, 2006.

When they could not find the suspected bomber, they went to a nearby house and took a disabled former police officer who was not a suspect, witnesses said in Hutchins' previous trial.

Murder is murder no matter where its committed. I suspect there were a lot of murders committed in Iraq and Afghanistan as far as that goes.

Let's convict all the motherfuckers who committed atrocities in that atrocity of a war.

Maybe someday, we'll be able to convict W. and Darth Cheney...

...with their "shock and awe" bombing of Baghdad and invasion and occupation of Iraq. When is THEIR trial?

Military jury sentences U.S. Marine convicted of Iraq murder to time served

CAMP PENDLETON, CALIF. | BY MARTY GRAHAM

A U.S. Marine convicted of the 2006 murder of a former Iraqi police officer was sentenced on Thursday to time he had already served in confinement, in a decision by a military jury at Camp Pendleton in California.

The jury also gave Marine Sergeant Lawrence Hutchins III a bad-conduct discharge from the Marine Corps. He had served about seven years in confinement and had faced a possible sentence of four more years.

After the killing in Iraq came to light, then-U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus called it a "cold-blooded murder".

On Wednesday, the military jury at the Southern California base found Hutchins guilty of murder, conspiracy and larceny but acquitted him of a charge of making false statements.
