Bernie Sanders Talks Wealth Gap, Rips GOP in Official Presidential Announcement
Source: Mediaite
Senator Bernie Sanders held a press conference this afternoon to officially announce his 2016 presidential run. He spent much of his announcement focusing on the wealth gap and railing against billionaires literally able to buy elections.
Sanders confirmed his run in some interviews yesterday, and hes been making the issue of the middle class disappearing one of the major points of his campaign pitch.
He went off on Republicans for a bit for climate change denial, but pledged that he would not be running any negative ads and wants to keep his campaign focused on the issues.
And for those of you who know almost nothing about Bernie Sanders, we found out this week he once played a rabbi in a low-budget B movie.

Observation that the Press Conference was moved outdoors. Response to the suggestion that doing in the Senate Press Gallery would be a violation of Senate rules (mentioned earlier today)?

(20,317 posts)That's Sanders' biggest hurdle out of the gate, and I've little doubt the corporate media will do everything they can to keep him as unknown as possible.
Still, we're almost to the point where internet and social media can compensate for television coverage.

(1,986 posts)This might continue for awhile, because the media likes conflict, and they see Bernie as running against Hillary, which is, officially, what he is doing. Remember that the corporate media are in a bind here. They would like to suppress Bernie's ideas, but they make money by covering him. It reminds me of Marx's remark to the effect that the capitalists will sell us the rope we use to hang them.
Corporate media doesn't need to do anything, because a large majority of potential voters in this country don't care and don't listen to ANY news. A sad situation at best. If Sanders campaigns on making football illegal, then they will pay attention.

I wonder what would happen a year from now out in front of Jimmy Kimmel's studio in Hollywood asking people what they think of Bernie:
"Bernie who?"
They would say the same about most candidates, to be fair

(3,655 posts)to carry it live. Exposing Fox News viewers to Bernie could be dangerous for Republicans. They are doing it to drag Hillary down but it may do more damage to the R's.

(1,986 posts)They have to cover him because exciting news sells. But then they end up spreading his gospel.

(446 posts)To see how the MSM tries to dismiss and diminish him. I imagine they will use the "Ignore" strategy as long as they can. Being part of the Democratic primary is smart on his part as he shouldn't be excluded from debates and the media will have to pay some attention even as they breathlessly fall over themselves over some Rethug with 2% of the primary vote. I think he is a decent enough man not to be a spoiler which is why he's not going the 3rd party route.
Will there be some version of the Howard Dean scream at some point? The Oligarchs can't be happy with him.
brooklynite
(94,635 posts)...the "MSM" (Fox News excepted) is only interested in a good story that draws an audience to their programming. If Bernie is "newsworthy", he''ll get coverage.
Howard Dean had already crashed and burned in the Iowa Caucus (coming in third); press coverage had nothing to do with it.

(446 posts)To "Entertaining" and I'll agree with you.
No disputing Dean came in third, but just a day or two before he talked about breaking up big media and all you saw on tv was that clip. Entertaining no doubt.

(94,635 posts)You saw the "Dean Scream" because, as you point out, it was "entertaining". And that happened AFTER he had lost in Iowa.
