Jeni's Ice Creams recall, second company in a week

Source: Cox Media

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A second ice cream company has issued a voluntary recall in less than a week.

Thursday, Jeni's Ice Creams, based in Columbus, Ohio, announced on their website and Twitter page that they are issuing the voluntary recall of all of its ice creams, frozen yogurts and other frozen products.

According to the company's press release, there is a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination and that the company is stopping all sales and closing all of its stores until all products are deemed safe.

The company said the contamination was found in a random sample collected by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

I was at the grocery yesterday and stopped by the empty Blue Bell shelves to pay my respects.

Dumping boxes & boxes of packaged product from the warehouses.
Sooo sad.
But do respect the company for clearing out all product.
I would do whatever I had to do to protect my brand also.

A non pasteurized ingredient seems likely.
Bummer.

we need to get rid of these pesky regulations and inspections in order to let the free market do what it must.

Do you realize what a burden all that crap is?

Now, stop bothering me, I have to unload this worthless bluebell stock on some rubes.

I was only kiddin about stopping bothering me.

in the food industry in one form or another for the last 37 years. the most likely cause is an over worked under paid sanitation dept, lack of time to do the job well, or some supervisor frightened for his job cutting corners on maintenance. Sorry their is no place for someone like me to go. I mean Alcoholics have meetings, but i have no place to go to say My name is... and I'm a suspicious bastard.

I spent a fair amount of time in food too. Tough business, especially on the dairy side, when you start cutting corners. The problem with QA is that they're at their best, doing their best work, when you see absolutely no issues requiring you to have a QA group. This is what happens when you think you can get away cutting corners.

I'll see you at the SBA meeting.

... coupled with rampant abuse of antibiotics in dairy herds.

But stuff like cleaning and sanitation are the first to get a short-cut, since they don't 'affect' production quantities and hence have no effect on "productivity".

The good news is this is costing BB a bundle and I'll bet they don't let it happen again. And their competitors are singing "but for the grace of god go I".

I'm getting a little freaked out about all this. I am having to keep my husband on a neutropenic diet for a while and things that he likes are already so limited. Now I'm afraid to buy even "fancy" ice cream, which he could use to put on weight. I have a special recipe for homemade ice cream that we love, but it uses honey, and that's a risk too. I'm suddenly very cognizant of all the potential food hazards out there. Normally I wouldn't care—we've never gotten sick from food before. But when your immune system is very compromised, this stuff suddenly looms very large in the every day.

And I've been making ice cream for more than 20 years with my trusty Krups ice cream maker.

However, for some reason, homemade ice cream is not recommended on a neutropenic diet. Although I am scrupulous, I'd rather not take a chance. I suppose it's because the custard base one cooks for an ice-cream may not reach completely safe temperatures to ensure totally bacteria-free state as it cools for chilling in the maker. I don't know ... but I'm not taking any chances. It's a small thing to give up for a period of time.

"Listeria isn't usually found in ice cream, since the bacteria can't grow at freezing temperatures."

I very much doubt, these days- the base ingredient of milk and cream is mixed as fresh milk and fresh cream at the packaging factory.

one thing I have noticed is when you let a container of 'ice cream' go to room temp. it doesn't melt into a puddle like real ice cream does.

Wonder if the corps buy tankers of pre-mixed made where?

....by mistake (sorry), and in it I said that I believe this weird bug I seem to be fighting could possibly be listeria or some other such foodborne pathogen. I NEVER get sick - haven't even had a cold in almost 7 years. I am disgustingly healthy. But my stomach has been upset, I've got the body aches and a fever. This is definitely not a cold - it's a stomach thing. Imagine how people with compromised immune systems are affected. I'm healthy enough to fight it, whatever it is.

I believe our food system is far more contaminated than anyone realizes. The FDA has very limited ability to force recalls, so they are usually voluntary, and usually after people are already sickened. With listeria, the bacteria can hang around in your body for up to two months before you show any symptoms of illness. Also? Republican budget cuts have reduced the number of FDA inspectors in plants, so we're setting ourselves up for more of this stuff.
