Kerry says Congress cannot modify any Iran-US nuclear agreement

Source: Daily Mail

WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday they would not be able to modify any nuclear agreement struck between the United States and Iran despite threats by Republican senators.

In congressional testimony, Kerry said he responded with "utter disbelief" to an open letter signed by 47 Republican senators that warned that any nuclear agreement would only last as long as U.S. President Barack Obama remains in office.

"When it says that Congress could actually modify the terms of an agreement at any time is flat wrong. You don't have the right to modify an agreement reached executive to executive between leaders of a country," Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which does not include Senator Tom Cotton, the Republican from Arkansas who wrote the letter.

The White House slammed the letter as "reckless" and "irresponsible," warning that it interfered with efforts to negotiate with the Iranians.

4. Wrong! The GOP would probably do quite well as doorstops.

They sit on their asses and do nothing to advance meaningful legislation or deal with the problems we have, because Heaven forbid it might show government as a force for good, and even accomplishing something. They're nothing but dead weight.

Doorstops would be good.

This baked-in pattern of maniacal and irresponsibile words and actions is precisely why they cannot be trusted to govern. Unfortunately, the derangement that drives most of them is shared by the constituents who cast their votes for them.

As this and other indicents attest, this nation is in the midst of a serious mental health crisis.

Yes, the senate can reject a treaty, but in an executive agreement that's not submitted to the senate, they have virtually no power... unless part of the agreement requires the congressional allocation of funds, which I believe they are not required to provide. I don't believe president Obama would include any such language in this agreement though, so in this case, Kerry would be right. The next president (be they Dem or Rep) won't bound by this agreement.
