19-year-old dead after being shot by Madison police officer, chief says

Source: Wisconsin State Journal

A 19-year-old man died after he was shot Friday by a Madison police officer following an altercation on Williamson Street, Chief Mike Koval said.

Madison police declined to identify the man, but family and friends identified him as Tony Robinson, a 2014 graduate of Sun Prairie High School.

After the shooting, a crowd of demonstrators and organizers from the Young, Gifted and Black Coalition gathered at the scene and formed a line across Few Street, where police had blocked off the area around the scene of the shooting.

Dozens of people drummed, prayed and chanted “Black lives matter.”

A recent state law demands police shooting be investigated by an outside agency.
Keep it open and fair is all we ask.

Wisconsin may be racing to be the new Mississippi under governor 1% Walker, Madison, the capital and intellectual heartbeat of the Midwest is not Fergusson. I will say though we have been experiencing a rash of gang related gun crimes. In general the police force in Madison and Dane county is well educated and highly trained and effectively led. But as a small city we are starting to experience big city problems with an estimated 3000 to 5000 gang members of varying degree of gang involvement and commitment.
Madison has often found itself at the top of national settings when social crises occur, once again that may well be revisited.

5. It's worth mentioning too that the Madison City Police union

stood with the demonstrators in 2011.

I have no idea what happened yesterday, but the Madison police have generally been pretty cool about handling things.

It's sad that there's no clear-cut way to combat rising gang violence, especially in a city that's not used to it. I don't think this young man was a gang member from the looks of things, but regardless this situation should have been handled better and without the cost of the kid's life.

8. All I see is he "assaulted" the cops after they broke down his door and accosted him. ETA>>>

ETA, there will be more to this story I am sure. I am basing what I say and feel on what I have read here. It depends on what "heard a disturbance" means, if there really was something going on or it that is another one of those cliched phrases like "reached for his waistband".

At least in the story in the OP. It doesn't say he assaulted the cop and others.

An officer went to an apartment that the man had gone into, heard a disturbance and forced entry, and was assaulted by the man, Koval said.

“The officer did draw his revolver and subsequently shot the subject,” he said.

Koval said more than one shot was fired.

Report comes in about a dude jumping around in traffic and they shoot the kid dead. It just doesn't add up to me. How much traffic could there have been at that time of night in a residential neighborhood? News media is laying low on this, due to Selma ceremony today.

People around here leave work at 5:00 for the most part, and traffic can stay stacked up until 7:00 pretty easily.

Veteran white cop who shot unarmed black teen

A veteran white cop who fatally shot an unarmed black teen during a Wisconsin apartment scuffle killed another man in a 2007 shooting, officials confirmed Saturday.

Tony Robinson, 19, was not carrying a weapon when Officer Matt Kenny began shooting Friday evening after a brief chase through the capital city of Madison.

“He was unarmed,” said Police Chief Mike Koval as protesters gathered for a second straight day. “That’s going to make this all the more complicated for the investigators, for the public to accept.”

Robinson, described by family and neighbors as a peaceful and friendly teen, was inside his apartment around 6:30 p.m. Friday when Kenny forced his way inside, cops said.
