Ukraine rebels disavow ceasefire at encircled town
Source: Reuters
Ukraine's rebels disavowed a new truce on Sunday hours after it took effect, saying it did not apply to the town where most fighting has taken place in recent weeks.
Guns fell abruptly silent at midnight across much of eastern Ukraine in line with the ceasefire agreement, reached after a week of diplomacy led by France and Germany.
But pro-Russian rebels announced they would not observe the truce at Debaltseve, where Ukrainian army forces were encircled and Kiev military said rebel attacks on the town steadily increased from mid-afternoon on Sunday.
"Of course we can open fire (on Debaltseve). It is our territory," senior rebel commander Eduard Basurin told Reuters. "The territory is internal: ours. And internal is internal. But along the line of confrontation there is no shooting."

(16,974 posts)They are also doing the same thing south along the coast. I guess they are not pulling back the artillery like they agreed to also.
I hope the Ukraine government does to get the moral high ground

(3,982 posts)There was shelling of Donesk only one hour after the cease fire (from the "cauldron" .
Getting things simmered down will take time, and there is a lot of work yet to be done on the accords. A lot of bad blood occurred between the two sides.

(16,974 posts)seems to be ignoring the cease fire it signed. They can not pick and choose what parts of the line they will cease fire on. The "pro-Russians" have already stated Debaltseve is not part of it.

(35,356 posts)You can't stage artillery on it. And nobody's going to defend another if it means a bloody nose. We're stalwart protectors of those abused by piss-ant enemies, esp. if we can just lob bombs at them from 15k feet. Otherwise it's the Order of the Brown Trousers for us.
For many, the moral high ground is whatever you capture and get. Part of the "greed is good" movement, esp. when you thoroughly dehumanize those you need to take from.
They've also disavowed any need for letting the Ukr government take control over the borders.
Of course, this comes on the heels of shelling the evacuation of the injured yesterday. Not reported in Fellow-traveller news it didn't happen. That sums up much of Russian history. The truth is whatever you let people believe, with a concerted effort to make sure that they believe what you let them.

But surely the reporter knew that but it would not make as much impact as a little lie.
That is the trouble with msm, it is full of little lies aimed at making the news, rather than reporting it.

WHAT IS MODERN CENSORSHIP?
At Project Censored, we examine the coverage of news and information important to the maintenance of a healthy and functioning democracy. We define Modern Censorship as the subtle yet constant and sophisticated manipulation of reality in our mass media outlets. On a daily basis, censorship refers to the intentional non-inclusion of a news story or piece of a news story based on anything other than a desire to tell the truth. Such manipulation can take the form of political pressure (from government officials and powerful individuals), economic pressure (from advertisers and funders), and legal pressure (the threat of lawsuits from deep-pocket individuals, corporations, and institutions).
