Sun News Network to shut down: sources

Source: CBC

UPDATE: Sun News Network went off the air at 5 a.m. ET Friday after failing to find a new owner. Click here for the latest updates on this story.

Sun News Network is about to sign off, permanently. CBC News has learned that the cable news television channel will shut down early Friday.

The network began broadcasting in April 2011, launching a right-of-centre programming schedule, but it has had a constant challenge attracting viewers.

Its supporters blamed the CRTC for not giving it the same access enjoyed by news channels operated by CBC and CTV.

The federal broadcast regulator denied Sun News a guaranteed spot on basic cable TV packages in August 2013.

Data released as part of that application showed that while the network was available to 5.1 million households, it was only attracting, on average, 8,000 viewers at any given time.

good riddance to this cheapass fox wannabe.
We have some crazy conservatives here in Canada, but thankfully not enough to keep this right wing trash afloat!

That a network filling a void wanted by the public would have seen said public rise up in support and demand to have their 'Sun News TV'

IN other words, if they were any good the market would have created a need for it to exist. Their ratings were terrible, there was no public outcry for the network on cable, so it died

5. There were certainly many who rose up against it being licensed in the first place.

A lot of people, including some in government, believed and said it was Harper's way of introducing Faux style 'reporting' here and spoke up in parliament, petitions went around, I remember signing one. So glad it's gone.

9. And Conservative PM Harper tried to pass a bill allowing "news" networks to lie on air

back with the launch of Sun News. He failed because, as Robert Kennedy wrote in his blog:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-f-kennedy-jr/fox-news-will-not-be-moving-into-canada-after-all_b_829473.html

Canada's Radio Act requires that "a licenser may not broadcast....any false or misleading news." The provision has kept Fox News and right wing talk radio out of Canada

And now Sun News, which was born in Canada but still skirted the law and got away for years with at the very least a "misleading" slant, has failed to compete in the free market.

Its a good day in Canada!

How quaint.

Us forward thinking modern Americaans best Democracy on the planet has no such thing. Down here MSM can knowingly lie with impunity! Just like what our Founding Father's envisioned when they wanted a free press, so every citizen will be well informed to participate in the national dialog and how their Democracy is being run.
