Email scam adds to Anthem’s troubles, brings BBB advice

Source: Omaha World Herald

Just a day after the announcement that as many as 80 million customers of Anthem Health Insurance could be victims of a data breach, scammers were sending out emails that convincingly spoof Anthem’s logo and corporate look.

These emails are unrelated to the data breach itself. The emails claim to be from Anthem and to provide information about free credit monitoring. This is a scam. The Better Business Bureau is offering the following advice:

>> Get your information only from Anthem. Go to anthem.com directly, not from a link in an email or other website, and click on the “Learn More” button.

>> Consider placing a free fraud alert on your credit reports or, for a fee, a credit freeze at the three major credit bureaus: Equifax (800-525-6285), Experian (888-397-3742) or TransUnionCorp (800-680-7289).

.... I used to work in Legal at an insurance company HQ'd in Indiana (about 20 miles from Anthem's HQ) and anytime there was a data breach, we HAD TO offer to pay for 1 year of credit monitoring for anyone involved.

Not sure why the same isn't happening in this case.

Maybe Anthem owns more of Indiana State Gov't than I thought they did.
