Just musing about it
When there was a shooting in Toronto, two dead, 12 injured, I pointed out that was unusual for Toronto, but Tuesday Night in San Diego. Yup, my local gun and knife club has these MCI's often, actually too often.
Listening to Melissa Harris Perry, she made essentially the same point. We are all horrified, properly so, over Aurora (and I expect more mass shootings where we actually pay attention, middle class, out of the hood America). But while we are horrified, I almost expect to hear another MCI with several people shot, at the gun and knive club over the scanner...and you know how many media outlets will cover that? Or if they do, for more than part of the news cycle? That is part of our collective social sickness.
I realize this ain't gonna change any time soon...but just pointing this and the yes, disparity in the coverage. There are many reasons, but sooner or later we must face to this...as a society.
Another point made by one of her guests was how Batman is set in a failed state...I could not help it, but by his definition, the US is a failed state...after all, the state has no monopoly over the use of violence, and there is utter corruption at the upper echelons, and the rich refuse to pay taxes. Assuming we go watch it, quite frankly I really don't want to, this will make the Black Knight Rising take on an absolutely new meaning, one the very much RW author did not intend.
(For the record Batman is a creature of the depression, and used to speak to that, but properties evolve.)
