(50,649 posts)"I have never stood before someone who had NO capacity for empathy like Mitt Romney."
Every utterance by him shows exactly that; no capacity for empathy, no compassion, no desire to even try to understand anything that doesn't mesh with his very, very narrow and self-absorbed view.
Thanks for posting this and a big thank you to Julie Goodridge for speaking out and fighting for marriage equality.

I've met a few people like him and his wife, they really do lack the ability to see beyond themselves, lack the ability to put themselves in someone else's shoes, lack the ability for empathy and compassion.

Julie Goodridge was a lead plaintiff in Goodridge v. Dept of Public Health the lawsuit that brought same-sex marriage to Massachusetts. In this video, Goodridge shares her familys encounters with Gov. Mitt Romney, including a meeting with Romney, which Goodridge describes as the most frustrating experience in the entire marriage case.
Julie and her partner won their hard-fought right to marry after years of struggling in Massachusetts courts.
In her Mitt Gets Worse video, Julie describes her meeting with Gov. Romney, who responded to a personal appeal for equality by saying: I dont care.
xxqqqzme
(14,887 posts)a child of a gay couple. They live/lived in Massachusetts while rmoney was governor. There were complications w/ the birth and the child was rushed off to ICU w/ the partner following the child. When she tried to return to Julier, she was not allowed to see her partner because she was not next of kin. She was denied access to the baby for the same reason. Julie says their story was reported/covered by every form of media - article in People Magazine, local news - when they finally got an appointment to see rmoney. Julie says he had no idea who they were or why they were there to meet w/ him. She says there was a complete lack of empathy during th entire meeting. When he replied to her questions as to what she should tell her daughter, he looked past her when he answered. He couldn't even make eye contact.
I'm hoping there are DUers, who lived in Mass, during this time, who can add details.

(2,322 posts)I can't think that even the Log Cabin dreamers would vote for him. Not that we don't all need to be motivated to fight tooth and nail against Mittens in this election and this video certainly would get me to do that if I wasn't already doing it--and, certainly, any Republicans who honestly support LGBT should see this. It might be the think that makes them think twice about voting for Romney. But being aimed mostly at LGBT voters, is there anyone who would see this video who isn't already convinced Romney would try to stuff every LGBT back in the closet if he were crowned president?

Posts complaints about the president every single day on his Facebook page, says that we shouldn't care about Romney and his money, how we should all be voting for him or else we're traitors, etc.
I went to high school with this guy. I was one of the first people he came out to. After high school he left our small town and spent four years working in drag. I always thought he'd be progressive. Turns out he's a racist.
He'd rather vote against his own interests if it means keeping a black man in office.

Glibness and Superficial Charm
Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."
Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.
Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.
Incapacity for Love
Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.
Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.
Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.
Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.
Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.
Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

SemperEadem
(8,053 posts)all he needs to do is convince "jus' plain folk" that he can "give" them jobs... and convince them that they, too, can be rich one day if only they cut the tax rate for the 1% and heap more taxes on themselves. Then when they've put him in office, they will be just as broke and unemployed as they are now and most of the things which Obama has put in place to help "jus' plain folks" (like grandma not having to shell out $$$4 to bridge the gap of the donut hole that's been closed because of ACA, or their kids being denied coverage while still hooked up to the monitors in the ICU) will be rescinded and they will be left to shift for themselves.

(11,012 posts)Many people who are ambivilent or have no interest in gay marriage would still respond with disgust to the the lack any kind of human feeling for what this family went through.
Heck, even people who are against gay marriage would find Romney's lack of courtesy alone appalling, let alone his inability to feel any kind of empathy or sympathy.

(5,198 posts)I think it is time for us to be completely open and honest about calling someone a sociopath. Mitt Romney is a sociopath. We have to start talking about this in plain terms because by not doing so we will as a people, as a society, as a country and as a world continue to be ABUSED by these people that completely lack all sense of empathy and ethics.
Mitt Romney is a sociopath. GWBush and his father were classic sociopaths. These people should NEVER be put into leadership positions of ANY kind.

(57,936 posts)I don't think they can feel the suffering of the homeless. I don't think they feel the suffering of families who have children with pre-existing conditions and couldn't get healthcare before the ACA. They don't know what it is to wait until you are in your late 30s or early 40s to start a family because you want to pay your student loans first and you don't make enough to do that and support a family. They have NO IDEA. They feel so superior about their home-schooled and private-schooled children and their large, large families and really, honestly can't figure out why other people are so evil and have abortions or send their children to public schools.
What monsters. What creeps. Not all Republicans are so lacking in empathy. But, many, many of them are. They will tell you that they enjoy their wealth either because they made better choices than others or because God has bestowed their good fortune upon them. In fact, not all, but many of them owe their wealth to an accident of birth or just plain downright good luck.
No empathy. They forget that they too have their problems, and when they do, they are the first to demand help and sympathy from others. Ann Romney for example has MS. That is a painful condition. I'm sure she feels her own pain. But she looks down on others who want the same kind of healthcare for their MS that she can afford. No empathy. Somehow she really feels that she deserves better healthcare than do others who have less money and less social pull than she does. At least that appears to be her attitude. That would be the effect of what her husband claims are his policies.
How can anyone deny a gay couple the fundamental right to marry? Lack of empathy. That's how.

(11,087 posts)Someone should ask his acquaintances how he reacted to movies they watched with him. Romney probably laughed inappropriately during heartbreaking scenes, and anytime someone on screen got injured.
For instance, during Schindler's List, I imagine Romney went, "Ha, HA!. Did you see that guy get shot in the head? Ha, ha, now that was funny."

(34,557 posts)Romney has been like this his whole life. He was a heartless, mean-spirited bully bastard in high school and it's obvious he learned absolutely nothing since. In fact, he has shaped his whole life around being a bully and a champion of the Haves to make sure they give up nothing to the Have-Nots. I sincerely believe that Mitt Romney is at best a sociopath and possibly a psychopath. Ann Romney seemed more human until she began talking. Now she's been outed as the oh-so-entitled rich bitch unfunny Lovey Howell III. She would do well to just keep her trap shut and torture some more horses.

They don't appear to give a rat's ass. These would be the people that the Obama campaign is trying to reach out to in Florida, Ohio, and probably my own state of Pennsylvania. They are the voters of the past, not future, these folks...
What is it going to take? I hear her message, and the people like my sister (going door to door in FL) are frustrated about the apathy.
What's it going to take to see how much worse it can get under this knuckle dragging elitist with the same vacant and dead eyes as GWBush & Company?
