Newt Gingrich, His Divorces, and Evangelicals

In 1980, evangelical voters had a clear choice between a solid Bible-believing, and actually Christian living, bona fide born again Christian - indeed a president who made "born again" a household term - and a divorced actor.

The evangelicals went with the divorced actor.

Do not overestimate the extent to which they actually give a darn about that kind of thing.

They respond to the words... the little snippets of phrases from hymns that outsiders do not recognize but which resonate strongly with them... the dark suggestions that "secular humanism" is at the root of all our problems as a country.

The greater the sin, the greater the glory in having been forgiven by God. That's really how these folks think. The superstars among them are the ones who have the tallest tale of the most horrific depravity from which they have now been saved, Hallelujah!
