International reporters descend on Bermuda looking for Romney files

International reporters poking around Bermuda. The Thistle House in Hamilton, Bermuda, is listed as the address of Mitt Romney's Bermuda corporation.

International news organisations are descending on Bermuda to investigate US presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s financial connections to the Island.

National Public Radio (NPR) reports this morning that they paid $20 to look through files at the Registrar of Companies, spoke to the Department of Communications and tried to visit Thistle House on Burnaby Street.

According to records, Mr Romney’s family is involved in a shell company, Sankaty High Yield Assets Investors Ltd., based in Bermuda that was transferred to a blind trust in his wife’s name right before he was sworn in as the governor of Massachusetts in 2003. The company is registered to Quorum International at MJM. Quorum provides administrative services for incorporations.

In the lobby of the Thistle House, where law firm MJM Limited is located, the reporter spoke to passers-by, including a lawyer who worked in the building and a policeman on the street.
The former expressed annoyance that US politics were casting Bermuda in a bad light.
"It's the American politicians that make it out to their public that ... anybody who does business with Bermuda is like a dirty old man dealing with pirates," said Steven Rees Davis.

I'm betting that the minutes of meetings of the board of directors will show that Romney selected replacements for himself in 1999 and specifically stated the authority he was delegating to others to act in his name and that he was taking a temporary leave of absence. We my even discover that he took breaks from the Olympics to continue attending board meetings after 1999. If I were reporters, I would be hitting the court records to go over any litigation in which Bain was involved after 1999 to see what internal Bain documents might have made their way into the court file.
