Harry Truman was in his first term as Veep even though FDR was on his fourth as POTUS. Trump cannot fire a sitting Veep as they are elected by the electoral college.

The VP is an elected office. All trump could do is to select a new VP for 2020 but that would be messy if Pence ran for the nomination
