A senior student had written a long and thoughtful essay about Clemson and how it could be improved. Basically it was about considering others more. Obviously this is not an issue confined to Clemson. She made it abundantly clear that there were many things she appreciated about the school.
I was going to respond to some of her comments but the first post I read that was sent to her caught my hair on fire. I went after that toad with both barrels.
Here is the post a middle-aged man wrote in response:
"Get a job sweetheart. Grow out of your millennial feelings into adult realities. Earn a whole lot of money in the adult world, (who doesn't care what Gannett or USA Today cares about), give it to the school, and then you will have a real voice. In the meantime, you will do better screaming your little brains out in front of Harcombe dining hall. I just love snowflakes, even the orange ones."
My answer back to him:
To begin with she's not your sweetheart. Using that term to someone you don't know is disrespectful and shows a complete lack of manners. In addition, she has every right as do others to voice their concerns whether they have a billion dollars or live paycheck to paycheck.
I would venture to say that the vast number of alums do not have the kind of money you allude to. Many give generously to Clemson and 'generously' is a relative term. Their love and concern for Clemson is as vital as it is immeasureable. Do we now line up people based on their monetary worth and listen to them in that order?
I am not naive and I know money talks. However, Clemson should make sure that the money's words don't drown out that of others. As far as calling someone a snowflake, that seems to be the cute term in vogue to label anyone who raises their voice about an issue. You have trivialized an issue that others do consider important.
You would be wise to remmber that snowflakes don't really disappear. They transform into a different force. Your obvious lack of even a basic respect for others is more telling about you than you may realize.
Meh!
BTW calling him out on manners is one of the biggest insults you can level at somebody down here.

(10,252 posts)that his moral compass is broken, assuming he ever had one. If he values the acquisition of money as a higher value than people, and rates a person's worth by their net worth, he's probably not a happy person. Moreover he probably mingles with people just like him, who like him for his money, but not much else. Great for a Grifters' Convention. If he's a Christian, he needs to stop falling asleep in his pew, when the sermon is about practicing the Golden Rule. If he's an Ayn Rander (likely), I would have told him that practicing the Golden Rule is in everyone's self interest.
I get so tired of these self-serving sociopaths, who have not one shred of morality or compassion.

(81,238 posts)They do allow themselves to be brainwashed by the temptation of money. Those "God wants YOU to be RICH!!!!!" snake-oil salesmen. They don't perform their "ministries" from any Bible. Theirs is a Buy-Bull.
And you'll notice that NONE of these crooks, NOT a SINGLE ONE wrapping themselves around the Cross has EVER quoted the story of Jesus and the rich young man (the one who came asking how he could get in on this, who's instructed by Christ to "go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and come follow Me." Btw - the story ends with the rich young man going away, sadly).
You'll notice that NONE of these crooks, NOT a SINGLE ONE wrapping themselves around the Cross has EVER quoted the Beatitudes - where you will NOT find "blessed are the rich..." OR "blessed are the war-makers."
You'll notice that NONE of these crooks, NOT a SINGLE ONE wrapping themselves around the Cross has EVER quoted Matthew 25:35-45. That's the one about "the least of these." As in - "whatever you did to the least of these, you did to Me." The list includes "when I was poor...", "when I was naked...", "when I was homeless...", "when I was sick...", "when I was in jail...".
Here's lookin' at YOU, Paul Ryan, you selfish, miserable, conniving, phony-"Catholic" fuck.

(41,977 posts)Partly, because I am interested in women's lives from everywhere, and I adore regional idioms, but I must admit, I've never seen a deadly insult covered in so much sugar in my life. Watching further, the stress on good manners and graciousness is there throughout.
That man sounds not just gauche, and ill-mannered but ignorant as hell. He must have majored in beer chugging.

I am not kidding about manners. If you did not say 'yes ma'am, no ma'am and other basics', you were in big trouble. The worst thing your parents wanted was for somebody to think you weren't 'raised right.'
Manners can also be used as weapons. In Charleston, if people don't want anything to do with you, they will never be so rude as to tell you to go away. They will become overly formal and respect the hell out of you. You can tell. They 'polite you to death.'

(41,977 posts)"Act like you got some raisin'"--presumably to a child. The actors expanded the channel to display not only southernisms, but funny discussions about what it meant to be raised in the south. It's funny and charming, it doesn't avoid stereotypes but broadens the outlook.

They need to be reminded that they are not.
Also, isn't it sad how he seems to think that making money is the only thing that matters in life?

(32,638 posts)We had a governor in PA (Republican Corbett - gone now) who spent not one penny on education on 4 years.
Now we've got Gov. Tom Wolf (Democrat thank God!) who's trying to fix it, but it takes time.
And there are so many things that need fixin'.

(14,856 posts)I've been doing that as well. These jackasses listen to RW radio hours a day for years, they hear how utterly nasty the hosts are toward anyone with whom they disagree, and they come to think it's socially acceptable to talk to people that way in real life. Well, it isn't.
